Oversize / Larger Capacity Fuel Tanks from IMS

Where ever we park the motorhome, USA
I just finished talking with IMS regarding how many commitments they need to manufacture an oversize tank for a particular bike. I saw an ad where the listed a tank for the Huskies, so I thought they may be interested in making a mold for the Husabergs. They require a minumum order of 100 tanks to offset the investment in making the mold. I would be interested in a larger tank, and I know several other people that also want one. So the questions are:

1. How large of a tank would everyone agree to buy?
It has to be a one size fits all compromise.
3.1 to 3.5 gallons is my choice

2. What color? Blue, natural, yellow?

3. Would you pay a $100 non-refundable deposit?
(refundable if we fall short of the minimum, non-refundable if you cancel
and we only have 99 other deposits) The actual price has not be set by
IMS.

If we fall short of the minimum, it may be possible that some of the dealers could be willing to order a tank or two.

Any and all replies (positive & negative) are appreciated.

The one thing I disliked about my Husaberg was the wide fuel tank with sheet metal screws into plastic. I got a new IMS tank for my 04-TE450 Husky and it is nice with the inserts for the screws.

Here is the story on the Husky Tanks. Halls Harley/Husqvarna in Illinois paid the money for the molds (I believe around $25000.00) with Halls getting the first 150 tanks and they were selling for around $225.00

I would go with a 3.2gal tank with the brass inserts for mounting the shrouds, narrower, taller and lower on the bottom.

If we could enough interest this would be a good deal for BMG to help out with, they could get the rights and sell to dealers or a dealer could this with the backing from the members.

Hey Splat -

You could put me down for one; 3.6 gallons (just like the KTM MXC) would be preferable, in natural with a dry-brake option. This would give me approx 4.2 gallons with the under seat tank and keep the center of gravity as low as possible.

A $100.00 deposit would not be a problem...

I would be interested in a 3.6 also. Yellow would be my first choice but natural would be O.K. too. If a deposit is needed that would be fine.

I would be cool with yellow, if it were the same yellow that comes on the late model bergs. Looks good and you can still see the fuel level

1) This is a tough one. I have a 520MXC and it is 3.7 which will easily make a 100miles, but due to it's size it makes the 520 feel like a TANK. I believe the stock berg is a 2.5 gallon tank.

I would think a 3.3 would be perfect, it would add approximately 1/3 more fuel and subsequently increase fuel range by a 1/3. At this size hopefully the tank would feel like an IMS tank for a KTM. Yet for those who wish to go larger they could add the auxiliary and have over a four gallon tank which would be good for well over a 100miles.

2) Doesn't really matter as long as the tank is not opaque. Any color would work as long as the tank is translucent. I like the look of the stock yellow tanks.

3) If I wasn't still in college.

I absolutly would give a deposit, I would prefer a 3.5 or larger, stock yellow, but that really does not matter to me. consider me in.

The 3.6 + the underseat and the acerbis .8 gallon front numberplate tank=5.0 gallons plus. Now that would be a nice desert setup. Five hours of non-stop fun!

I am very interested in this. I say a photo of an alloy tank that looked very nice just wonder if the radiators would be to wide with the new slim design of the tank.
Deposit is no problem
Translucent color is my vote
Tank size, more is better to a point the slimming design should be paramount

Count me in - (3.5 min) Yellow is better but clear is OK too. How would you keep tabs on this?

I am in Africa but a deposit is not a concern

In order to make this happen, we will need each person to ask their friends/mates with Husabergs if they want a larger tank. So each of us can make a tally of our friends' responses and post how many commitments they can get. I'm sure that there are literally thousands of Husaberg riders out there with whom we ride; people that don't visit this site. I meet someone new every couple weeks. Even though I tell them about the site, they don't visit this site. So, if I get a few names of riding friends, and you get a few names, then we can add the totals of each members' list. Even if you only have one other person from your area that wants one, the goal of 100 will be reached very quickly. I'm sure that in places like Australia, there must be dozens of guys that would love to have a big tank for riding in the bush and outback areas. I know there are alot of desert guys that want one.

If some of the European riders could post this on their sites in their native language, this could snowball very quickly. Post a flyer at your local riding club, and your motorcycle shops as well.

If each member can get 1 or 2 or 3 friends involved, we can ship several tanks to a single address, which would save considerably on the shipping; especially overseas.

Keep posting the replies, we are about 20% of the way to the goal.

Ask your friends with Husabergs, and post their responses.

I'll speak for three to four of my racing buddies...we'd all like something in the 3.2-3.4 gallon range, natural or yellow, with the ability to add a dry brake. Deposits not a problem.

You can add a second tank for me; translucent yellow, 3.6 gals, dry-break capable.

Deposit; not a problem...

It seems to me we really need BMG to get involved. If every dealer put just one in stock that would really help us meet our goal.

We need to be able to approach them with some firm committed orders. IMS has has alot of requests for the tanks, but until someone can say "I'll buy xxx number of tanks", they don't want to risk the investment. BMG may not be interested in the risk either, unless we can hand them a certain number of deposits.

The dealers are not willing to step up and make the large investment either. None of the dealers wants to have 35 extra large fuel tanks sitting on the shelf. So if we can get our numbers up, then BMG and the dealers may be willing to buy into the pot. Then we all win.

OK, this is going somewhere! My time-zone is a little (!!!) bit different to most of you but I did a phone around to people I know and just from this remote corner of the world alone, you can count on atleast 8 (and that is just from one quick phone around!).

Assumption is atleast 3.5 Gallons, yellow preferable (maybe one or two will hop out if tank is neutral, and +- $250 (incl deposit)

Splat: I hope your keeping count!

ok, some of you may recall that just a few months back i asked clarke tanks if they would do some and they said "no, our time can be better spent looking after all the jap models hitting the market".

so i'm in to all this and i also had two clarke tanks imported here to the UK back in '01 for myself and ian my mate. we were running '99 WR400s and that was the last model year of the unrideable wide tank.

THE CLARKE TANK HELD MORE FUEL, HELD THE FUEL FAR LOWER IN IT'S BEAVER CHEEKS WHICH IS FANTASTIC FOR RACING!

NOT ONLY THAT BUT IT WAS NARROWER AND LOWER AT THE TOP. ALLOWING A SEAT TO GO EVEN FURTHER FORWARD WOULD BE A GREAT OPTION.

if anyone feels that it would genuinly meet these specs i would be very interested. would anyone else agree that the tank is too high at 11 and 1 (if the cap is called 12 o 'clock) o' clocks when cranked over?

regards

Taffy

I'm up for a bigger tank as long as its a similar yellow to my 2002's.

What is a dry break ?

Brass inserts for the shroud screws are a must

12-13 litres I mean 3.2-3.3 US gallons is good but no bigger.

Remember that if the bottom is lower than the top of the float chamber then the fuel won't drain.

Deposit is ok as long as I get back me money if it falls through.

Lloyd

A bigger tank sounds great. I vote for yellow, but neutral would be OK. Deposit not a problem.
Count me in.

Now if we can get the Aussies off their rear ends  and order some, we just might have enough.
