Hi all first post. Am fortunate enough to have a spankn new fe390 in my shed, but regretfully the bike seems to be very prone to overheating. After 3 hours of run in and first service I took on some single tracks. After a few Kms of 2nd & 3rd gear we came upon a fallen tree, I was stopped for no more than 30 - 40 seconds waiting for a couple of mates on their Husqys to get over the tree, once I got over and stopped, the berg turned into a cappuccino machine. I had a close look and the top of the water pump cover gasket was bubbling away. Noting that my mates Husqys thermo fans didnt even come on.

The Husaberg Dealer tested the bike and claims there is nothing wrong and gasket is not leaking. This is when I started to worry as the dealer just took on the Husaberg dealership and the mechanics dont have the experience / knowledge to address the problem. The dealer does agree its not normal and bike should not be overheating.

We have had a very cold and wet summer this year (Aus) and on that particular day it was no more that 25 degrees celsius.

If anyone has any information about 2012 fe390's being prone to overheating I would be grateful.

Does your dealer happen to be equipped with a Dynobench? Than you could see where it would run too lean.

If it is a fuel related issue, like weak fuel pump, or plugged nozzle in the injector, you would soon find out.

Thanks heaps Noppy I had not considered it running too lean. I will talk to the dealer and ask them about a dyno and the possibility of running too lean.

Check for air in your cooling system too.

The other piece is that these bikes just run hot. They pick up extra heat from the engine and exhaust configuration. I ride tight trails in the Canadian Rockies (not exactly a hotspot). My fan is on a lot. It even came on recently for a short bit on a winter ride with studded tires when the temps were just above freezing.

Fit the fan and you never have to worry about overheating.

The air is constantly bled out of the cooling system on your bike via the little hose just behind the intake manifold.

Where are you from? Is your bike full emissions legal for road use? If so it is definitely lean.

Do you have a fan on your bike?

FWIW, your bike is pretty new and will probably produce a little more heat than usual.........

You mentioned that it had its first service. Who did the service?

Check the oil level to make sure it is not too high as well.

Thanks all, some good feedback for me to ponder.

Dale, thanks for the info, To answer your questions:

Im from south eastern Australia and yes the bike does comply with Australian emission cont noise laws and is road regsitered. I have also installed a Pro Circuit muffler.

No fan on the bike.

I have been told that they do run hot when new.

The service was done by the local Husaberg Dealer in Canberra. Unfortunately my experience with them to date is not great, all they are doing is replacing the water pump cover gasket and its taken a week to get the part.

Oil level was good when i checked it before the ride.

Will talk to the dealer about making it a bit richer and get back to you on the result, I will also get a fan.

Jas,

Suggestions:

See if they will re-flash the ECU with the "closed course" competition map, this will help greatly with how hot the bike runs, and it will make it run better overall.

If it has the carbon canister vapor recovery system and air pump thing block it off too.

Definitely put a fan kit on it, well worth the money=no more boil overs.

You might also look into the Bullet Proof radiator guards, they will protect the rads in the event of a crash, and they allow a lot more air flow over the rads.

Dale

I agree with Dale. Install the competion map, BPD radiator guards, and definatly a fan kit. This should take care of your issue.

This has me thinking the same thoughts regarding my new 2011 FE 570 running hot and perhaps too lean. I removed the exhaust emission cannister and properly plugged the two holes. The dealer advise to disconnect/reconnect the battery to allow a resetting of the air-fuel. Still runs lean with a little rattle backfire and hot. Installed the fan but the coolant boiled over and the fan never kicked in. Would a 95/90 C thermo switch help? I ride in south LA with high humidity and tight woods - summer cometh. Thanks for tips on the lean machine and fan issues.

Thanks Dale much appreciated, its now 3 weeks since I dropped the bike at the dealer and still no sign of the replacement water pump cover gasket \ seal from Husaberg Australia, so no update.

Factory fan and "Force Radiator Guards" arrived today from one of the better dealers in Sydney "Suttos". The Suttos mechanic agreed with Dales diagnosis so Im confident im on the right track.

Will keep you posted. Any pics of what the carbon box looks like?

Bike in the shop for three weeks? :bounce: I would be fugging losing it and in full withdrawals :bounce:

I have had a very similar problem as soon as i instaulled a thermo fan i have had nothing other than battery problems. The battery only last 4 to 5 starts. the thermo fan seams to drane the battery.

Ok, finally got the bike back today. Dealer advised that they 1. replaced the water pump cover gasket and 2. reset the ECU. They contacted Husaberg HQ Australia about replacing the ECU map but HQ advised that there is only one factory map available. The dealer also admitted they do not have the tools or knowledge to replace maps!. Bumma no local expertise here in Canberra, off to Sydney!

After test riding it today without installing the fan it seems to be running at what seems to be normal temperature, no indication of overheating so far. Im keeping my fingers crossed.

Will now install fan & after market rad guards. Will also use "Engine Ice" coolant.

I had overheating issues on my new 2012 390, I changed to "Liquid Intelligence 115" Waterless Coolant (~$40/L) and have had no further over heating issues.

I have heard mixed reports about Engine Ice coolant.........

Thanks rob+ve its good to hear im not the only 2012 berg owner with this problem. Thanks for the tip on the coolant I will see how it goes. Do you use a thermo fan?

No thermo fan......

I have BPD radiator guards fitted however I experienced the heating issues with and without the guards.

Cheers
Rob

Hi all, just an update on my 390. Spent ANZAC day riding 50km of tight single tracks without thermo fan installed and im confident the overheating issue is resolved, bike never showed any signs of excessive heat, frame & foot pegs were not hot to touch . Its hard to conclude as to what actually resolved the problem. Besides reseting ECU it may have been the coolant change \ bleeding when they replaced the water pump gasket. will still install fan.
