Optimum Handlebar Width?

Any thoughts / experience regarding the ideal handlebar width. I am riding predominantly single track woods. The stock bar on my '05 Fe550 measures 32" not including the handguards. I'm toying with the idea of taking an inch off each side, however I do not want to adversely affect the high speed stability of the bike when things open up.

Ducky,

I think it is Taffy who recommends taking 3/4 of an inch off each side. there were some comments on the trail at the recent OZ force ride that some guys thought it would be a good mod due to the gaps in the trees.

Hi Ducky,

I don´t think there´s an optimum bar width for everyone.
This is something you´ve to try and test for your own (shoulders width, kind of riding, your likes of riding...)
I personally like the smaller width better (easier to pass trees, not soo much arm movement)
Better to cut off only half an inch of first, go for ride and see if you like it - if yes, cut another 1/2 inch off

for me, the OEM-bar was way to wide

yes i did 3/4" to 1" can't recall. if i was a burly lad with the earlier bars i wouldn't recommend it as the sweep back means the only thing touching the bars are the outside heels of your hands. but i think from '05 or so they started fitting the MX bars which are flatter and swept forward/straight across.

flic-flaks are quicker but the quickest is two trees together. another thing you forgot is that when you slalom and you have wide bars you'd be amazed how much you rock forwards and aft like one of those mental cases down at the asylum (or paul gascoine i guess poor sod!). it slows you and wears you down. another one: the bars dig in your midriff around the tightest turn as you have to get them right in your kidneys!

convinced yet?

regards

Taffy
