Only 176kmh!! I blame the X1.

8O Yup, I couldn't believe it. 8O
Took the berg out on the dirt road to warm it up before heading bush and on the way back gave it a bit of stick. :D
:D :D :D :D Dale, you are one sick unit! :) :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
Your X1 camshaft makes my liddle 400 pull like a 14 year old and yes the trail tech speedo had 176Km/h in the top speed memory when I got back to camp. The amazing part was that at no time did I ever feel "flat out", in fact I wasn't even trying to go fast, I ran out of room.
For those who are curious I'm running 11.6:1 compression and the original 38mm flat slide Del'Orto and exhaust with 13:50 rear gearing.
Best speed with original cam and this gearing was 168 and 163 with14:50.

The vicious engine braking has gone along with the super sensitive low speed throttle. I now have a definite power band like a two stroke and with one ride under the belt am already jumping higher, longer and with more consistent controllability. For trials and riding in cramped quarters and snotty hill climbs it is now so pleasant because it doesn't want to spear me off into the bush but chug along getting traction! And when you need it, just slip the clutch like a 250 and you are away like a 500.

8) I must mention a thank you to Anthony and Paul @ Powerhouse for the excellent tune up and jetting. 8)

My smile was so wide I'll be picking bugs out of my teeth for weeks.
Thanks Dale, the cam is good serious usable fun. Stay well all.
Cheers Ice. 8O

Hi Iceman,
Thank you for the feedback.
Happy to learn you are enjoying the camshaft.
Kindest Regards,
Dale

Motor modification's by Lineaweaver were indeed the best thing I could have done to my quad motor!

It flies now :D

Wow, 176 km/h with only a 13 tooth front sprocket! I think you had better fit a rev limiter Phil. 8O

I take it you won't be needing my PHM 40?

Talk to you soon.

How much is this cam? What would it do for a
FX470?Would it start better? How about the stalling
at low RPMs?I can't get used the the metric speed
thing,when I read 165 I keep thinking MPH,and I
usually chicken out about 175 on a street bike.

I have an X1 in my 470. I should have it running in a week or so. I'll try to post a report.

You have an exceptionally fast 400.
Has anyone else measured the top speed of their 'Berg?
You've piqued my curiosity and now I'll have to buy or borrow a GPS to test the top speed of my 520. 109MPH on a dirt road is fast!

i can get 170km/h on my stock 2003 FE501E.

have checked speedo alongside cars and it is accurate.

ps can wheelie it to 160kmh, but need to get in the tuck to go any faster!!

Jeff

sorry but it ain't doing 109mph. it's as simple as that. for a start, on 13T gearing you'd be trashing the engine at a zillion revs.

a policeman's son went on TT and said that he and his dad had put the speed gun on his dirtbike which was fitted with a trailtech.

the figure they came up with after several runs was something like 2.072 as the o/d of the front tyre. i ran 14T x 48T for nearly two years and have done many, many top end tests and the best i've had on 14/48 is about 82-84mph.

that's why this figure is wrong. but why don't we just sit here and talk about the "feel" of the cam and where the bike is better? surely that's more important?

Taffy

We topped out a stock KTM450exc with a gps
on loose dirt at 84mph.We would have to gear it up
quite a bit to hit 109.I don't know how much H.P.
it would take to pull that gear.

I got 107 mph out of my 501 on a slight downgrade hardpack dirt road measured with a trail tech. Way faster than this guy need to fall off.
I think my gearing at the time was 14/43. It would not pull that gearing at that speed on the flat but, it sure improved my fuel milage

I'm not quite sure what factory you are buying your bikes from, but it sure isn't the Husaberg factory I know :D :D :D

I think I've just woken up in cockoo land :D :D :D

Regarding GNC Dirttrack:
Triple digits on a 400 single is simply considered a day @ the office. :D

LOL! but somehow I don't think "stock" or "short gearing" are appropriate in the description of a DT400 or your typical day in the office?

My 2001 FS650 at its best state of tune got 138mph, unfortunately it could never quite muster that outdoors when under the influence of wind resistance - it only ever got to 122mph (radar trap) :D :D :D

Cheers,
Simon

Hi Simon,
In this business one must learn to read between the lines. :D

Barring the obvious instrument calibration error and all else remaining equal the jump to 176 KPH from 168 represents a near 5% increase in top speed. Not too shabby for an afternoons work.

Kind Regards,
Dale

Ps
Should the opportunity ever present itself:
I can perform honest speed runs as I own a Falcon police band radar gun and a GPS unit. I have used both instruments for several years to confirm proper high speed gear selections. Both have been tested @ Bonneville on a Rotax single.

Back to the cams...

The X1 is the cam for more mid to top and the X2 is the one for all-around performance increases, or am I backwards? I seem to remember a post on the old board where Dale described them and the best applications. ie. The more aggressive cam is better for the 550+ motors.

Oh and Dale, how would you stack up the cams in order of performance, yours and stock. I saw that they did this over at one of the KTM sites.

Ex.

Mild
.
.
.
Wild

Something like:

01
53
G3
X2
etc.

This may be helpful to tuners, say utilize a more mild low to mid cam on short courses, and a mid to top cam on more open courses.
