Hi,
I'm new the site,, Have had lots of bikes over the years, kawis, hondas,, ktm's, and now gasgas. I just talked to a guy who has a 97 husaberg fe401 that has a bad stator,, He's talking $800 obo.. I've heard horror stories about the older husabergs stators. If this is the only issue with the bike what would be a fair offer?? Oh, I'm mainly looking for a streetable dirtbike that can handle short streches of road to get to the trails,, my 250 gasgas is not fun on the road, 2strokes a little viby at highway speed.
Thanks!!
Steve

I'll post how it looks on Sunday as I plann on going over to see it. I'm picking up a lc4-400 the guy has and look at the husy too. He wants to make it a package deal,,

RE: "If this is the only issue with the bike is it worth buying?"

To answer you question, yes it's probably worth buying.

However, I'd make sure that the stator is indeed bad. And it's not something more that's keeping it from running.

I'd check with Motoxotica to see what the availability of parts are too.

A lot depends on whether or not the bike was taken care of or not, and how beat, or new it looks. It could be a diamond in the rough, or a pig with lipstick on it. Proceed with caution.

Having said that, the 97's were great bikes.

The seller said he ran it on a 1.5 hr highway cruise,, rt 80 thru Jersey into NYC, stopped at a bar and when they came out,, no start, no spark. Claims he tried everything and the dealer said the stator cannot take the heat from high rpm for extended time like a hr+ 80mph run,, I'll look at it,, I really want the lc4 but would be nice to bring two home,,always liked the husy's,,
Thanks,
Steve

Hey Steve,

Have a look around this site, I think in the owners DOC, or in the Hard Start Guide, check there for the Ohm readings on the SEM stator. Take a multi meter with you when you go to check out the bike and check the stator for out of range Ohm readings, or an open circuit so you can verify that it is the stator.

Doing a visual might also give you a clue. The old rotors if I am not mistaken were internal and the stators external. On some of those old rotors the magnets would come out of the rotor and then destroy the stator. I had to replace rotor or flywheel on my 94 501, and the stator itself had a crack in the case but it worked fine until I sold it.

As far as the heat goes, I remember seeing people put a couple of small fuel line barbs in the ignition cover and run one line to a small filter, and the other line to the air intake system to help pull a little bit of air through that area to help keep the heat down.

You might give a call to Mike Young at Big Gun exhaust as he used to compete on the Husaberg's in the World MX series around that time. There was also a guy named fletcher over here, up in Oregon that used to be Lance Smails mechanic during that time and from what I understand he was a great wrench on the Husaberg's so he might have either an opinion on the ignition, or a solution.

I probably put about 70-100 hours on my 94 501, which I bought used, after replacing just the rotor, kept the cracked sem stator, rode that bike in the blistering heat, and freezing cold trail riding, in regular District 37 desert races as well as national hare & hounds and never once had a problem with the ignition.

I didnt end up buying it,, it looked real clean,, the owner was tinkering with it when I got there. He wants to get it running so He can get more $.. I picked up his 95 RXC 400 DS bike with title in boxes for $250 tho,, Now to put it back together,,
