We have confirmed that Chevron has recently made a change to the formulation of DELO 400 Oil to meet the new CI-4+ specification. To meet the new specification, Chevron has added 260ppm of Moly. Moly is not compatible with wet clutches.

The new formulation appears to just be making its way into distribution, our local Chevron Oil dealer still has some CI-4 oil on the shelf. DELO 400 with the CH-4 specification is also ok.

Although designed for large diesel engines, DELO 400 Oil has been a popular oil for use in motorcyle engines because of it's anti-wear properties and very good wet clutch performance. Rekluse Motor Sports has recommended DELO 400 for use with the z-Start clutch.

After speaking with Chevron Technical support, it does not appear that Chevron has a suitable replacement product.

However, I confirmed with Shell Technical Support that the Shell Rotella T oils meet the CI-4+ standard and do not contain any Moly or other friction modifiers.

Thanks,

Al Youngwerth
President, Rekluse Motor Sports

Good. :D
Shell Rotella T has been my oil of choice for years. I typically have run the standard in my dirt bike and the synthetic in my street bike.

I sent info on this to Dale a day or so ago, he hasn't commented yet. I assume he is out of the office.

I use Shell Rotella T in both my dirtbike and streetbike. Here it is actually cheaper than Delo. A person had better keep up with what changes.

I used to run Molybond 2.5 molydisulphide additive in car & bike engines because my dad swears by moly in anything with gears, bearings or slidey bits. I was aware that it may cause wet clutch problems in 4 stroke bikes but I never had any. I don't tend to give the clutch a hard time though. Neither did it glaze up bores like I was warned.

Does anyone know of actual problems using molybdenum disulphide?

It will cause your clutch to slip.
The glazed bore is an old wives tale.

Wives talk about glazed bores from using poymers in oil ...? where the hell do you find woman that smart and interested in glazed bores 8O

has anyone ever had their berg clutch slip? i removed 3 of the 6 springs in my 96 (before replacing them with 97 springs) and the clutch worked fine....and i use the clutch

Moly may make your clutch slip but often it isn't a problem. On a bike with a marginal clutch (usually to keep the pull light) it can cause some slippage. I've used Redline for years, and it contains about 300PPM Moly, with no clutch problems on 3 different bergs. A DR350 started having clutch slippage problems with the Redline though. The Redline did cause my E starter sprague to slip on my 03, and I had to switch to Mobil 1 15/50 which has about 50PPM Moly to cure it. Hope this helps.

Ran the entire Daytona series (CRF 505) using a heavily modified Rekluse clutch and new formulation DELO 400. Said combination worked great.

Dales flat track

Dale, I was watching the race a bit this weekend. How did you do? What bike number, make, etc...?

Gentlemen,
I was in Daytona to support my dear friend Dennis Cameron. Dennis is a fifty-five year old Pro-Expert (Dirttracker) whom was nearly killed in a horrible Barberville (Daytona) half-mile accident in 1998. We returned to Daytona in order to silence the demons from said accident. We did seven events in seven days qualifying for one main in Ocala. We were never in contention nor did we expect to be. However, it was fantastic to be back @ the national level and I am now talking with two major teams regarding the possibility of making a return.

Sincerely,
Dale

I went to Wal-mart tonight to pick up some Rotella, and it too has been reformulated for the CI-4 plus standard. Looks like Mobil 1 or MC oil may be the last option.

Moly will attack and corrode bronze. It is not recommended
for engines with bronze bushings. Some of the very slippery
additives will make your clutch slip,I had some trouble with
Amsoil. When I disassembled the clutch, the plates were fine.
I cleaned them and put them back in.Went back to mobil one.

For what it may be worth:

DELO 400 15-40 continues to out perform anything I have tested to date.
Such includes abuse in slipper and auto clutches.

Dale.

i run delo 400 in my 02501fe with a rekluse auto clutch. no problems with clutch. change oil every ride. works for me.javascript:emoticon(':D')

For What It May Be Worth:

Sulfur/phoshphorus is an EP anti wear additive.

Sulfur/phoshphorus can attack light metals. However, Yellow metals are primarily attacked at high temperatures therefore such has never been a real concern.

I use delo 400 in my machine, which has close to 5000 miles, and the only thing I have noticed, is a heavier wallet.
