Hi Dale,

Now, talking of oil, I've been on a hunt for decently priced oil here in the UK. So far the availability of Delo has been absolutely zilch and the only times it has been available is on the off chance due to Chevron shipping mistakes and only then if you're really really lucky.

Anyhow, I have now found a Chevron Supreme Diesel Motor Oil 10w-40 and API SL/CF. It seems over here it is more intended for diesel cars and light commercials but to be frank at pounds - 22.99 for 20 liters I'm hardly going to argue. Even unbranded motorcycle oils will cost just under the 30 pound mark for 5 liters.

Anyway, my question - have you come across this oil? Is it likely to be a re-branded/modified Delo? And rather than asking if you have an opinion, I'll ask you what is your opinion.

Am I taking silly risks because I'm not only planning to use this stuff in my berg but also my Triumph that after several years I'm just getting back on the road again!

Cheers,
Simon

It seems I already have my answer.

From the Chevron web site and Product specification document:

APPLICATIONS
Chevron Supreme Motor Oils are recommended for all
four-stroke gasoline engines used in passenger cars,
light trucks, powerboats, motorcycles, and other mobile
and stationary equipment. They are excellent for highrevving
engines in small cars and light trucks. All grades
are specially formulated for use in turbocharged engines.

So, now that I've saved you English lot massive amounts of money, you can get the beers in later

RE: Re: DELO 400 Info

Hi, I could not find DELO in the market in Greece, and I thought I could try another diesel engine oil. So I bought the "Castrol GTX Diesel" 20W-50 API CF; ACEA A3/B3. You think it is OK to use it, or I have to return it?

DELO Caution

Over the counter DELO 400 has been re-formulated to comply with Federal emissions standards.

The EP package ( heavy metals ) has been significantly reduced.

One must now purchase oil in bulk ( I.E. 55 gallon drum ) to get the original formulation.
Such is what I do.

The same holds true regarding any Diesel oil.

Use a high end motorcycle specific performance oil or locate a fleet owner willing to share his bulk.

Cheers!

So are you saying that Chevron Supreme is not of the original formulation?

Re: DELO Caution

So are you saying that Chevron Supreme is not of the original formulation?

Anytime you see "reformulated" on the label said oil has been altered to comply with
increasingly stringent emission requirements.

All "over the counter" oils have been reformulated with the exception of oils clearly labeled " for off highway use only."

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

So in your oppinion, I should give it a miss then. And there's me thinking I had finally foun a cheap supply of oil

So I'd better return my "Castrol GTX Diesel" 20W-50 and buy something else huh?

I think so. I haven't seen it anywhere else. The other option you might have is to investigate the Texaco oils as Chevron and Texaco are part of the same company.

All the best,
Simon

If you're worried about the Chevron Diesel engine oil, then if you can find the Chevron Supreme 10W/40 Engine oil instead, it is still sold as

"Chevron Supreme motor oils are recommended for all four-stroke gasoline engines used in passenger cars, light trucks, powerboats, motorcycles, and other mobile and stationary equipment. They are excellent for high-revving engines in small cars and light trucks. All grades are specially formulated for use in turbocharged engines. Chevron Supreme motor oils are premium quality automotive engine oils for four-stroke, gasoline engines. Excellent antiwear protection. Protection against thermal breakdown. Clean engines and clean positive crankcase ventilation systems resulting from minimal deposit formation under heavy load and stop-and-go driving conditions. Meets or exceeds warranty requirements of car and light truck manufacturers relying on an API SM motor oil. Better high temperature control."

Again, motorcycles are included.

Hope this helps.

Here in Oz, the major oil companies have a hot line for technical support. In my experience there are generally helpful and knowledgeable individuals on the other end. Here in Oz we have 2 choices of Delo 400, the good one http://www.caltex.com.au/products_oil_detail.asp?id=23 and the new not so good for Bergs Delo 400 LE http://www.caltex.com.au/products_oil_detail.asp?id=277

If you give your Chevron tech support guy the Delo 400 spec and ask him what is the closest they sell locally you may get what you want.

Thanks Steve, you just answered my question.

Have you seen the multi grade Delo sold in four litre bottles anywhere over east?, all I can seem to find is the new style.

Cheers
Tim

Tim,

Dunno what the current availability is as I haven't bought any for while. I get it wholesale direct from my local depot so I'll find out what is happening. I'm away for a week as of tomorrow so won't follow up for a while. You should be able to chase it up locally though. Go to your local depot, not servo, and see what you can find out. Call the hotline no and ask tech support what is going to happen. Dale informs us that in the US its only available in 200l drums. I hope that doesn't happen here.

There were 4 litre bottles of Delo 400 Multigrade at my local Caltex servo in SA.
