New Rattle, Primary Gear Nut ?

Hadn't ridden my FS650C for several months and after setting the valves yesterday and starting the motor, I heard a rattle that I had never heard before ( did not have my helmet on at that time and could hear better) . Definitely in the clutch / primary area. When I snick it into gear and begin to let the clutch out, the rattle goes away. I'm thinking the primary gear nut has somehow worked it's way loose and when the clutch is let out it takes up the slack, holding the gear against the key and keyway.

Now for the question, repair looks pretty simple if the keyway hasn't been enlarged. 1)Would you guys repair it yourself or take it to a dealer ? 2)Is there a dealer on the East coast that any of you particularly trust ? ( I have had so few problems w/ the 650 I've never needed a dealer) . JBSRacing has a fix in a former gallery but I understand it may not have held, requires a tabbed lock washer that may be available only in the UK. 3) Does anyone know if that washer or something similar is available in the US ? 4) Anyother help or suggestiosn appreciated.

Thanks for suggestions.

i used a tab that has a tongue that drops in the slot of the gear made for the woodruff key.

you have better shops over there than we do in the UK so all you need to do is look for that kind of Tab in a hardware store?

Well, it wasn't the primary gear nut and it also wasn't the clutch basket ......hhhhmmmmm

have a look at the clutch nut in that case? put a pair of prise bars behind the camsprocket shaft and just make sure it's out fully towards you.

Many thanks, Taffy..will try that next..this is not making sense...

also, you really, really do have noises travel from the head down so i'd do this first:

check the cam chain has adjustment left - some clicks?
then the clutch nut which is just a case of grabbing the assembly and tugging it around.
intermediate shaft is out to you
after that you need to pull the rocker cover methinks.

Never start your Berg without wearing your helmet!
I only did it once and it cost me a fortune.
I now wear earplugs, balaclava and a tight helmet, my Berg sounds fantastic and my pockets are full of cash!

Ha! Ha! Ha! Freaky, You Are Funny!

Sadly I feel the same way. When I where my old Simson Bandit I hear much less then when wearing th Arai VX. It freaks me out hearing the valves and other mechanical things.

I don't wear ear plugs because my trips are too short so I miss out on that extra muffling.

It is my nature to destroy the indestructable. You can imagine how I feel about my 'Berg. I try to avoid the upper RPM range, but trying and doing a two different things.

Good luck with the diagnosis and fix.

I agree with you about trying to find a dealer/mechanic "you can trust."

It is much harder then it should be. I went to one of the top three Ducati mechanics to change my transmission(some how broke a gear, apparently unheard of).

1500 miles after the service I ended up getting stranded at Deal's Gap. The mechanic put the wrong loc tite on the bolts holding the flywheel and one of the backed out and took out my stator. Of course this happened the morning I told my friends I was going to ride the Blue Ridge and Skyline home, they were trailering their bikes back.

And people wonder why I don't trust anyone.

Best of luck and I'm anxious to see what is your problem. I'm sure I will encounter it soon enough.

Taffy,

The cam chain was tight and in good shape. The clutch basket / assembly was also tight, no slop. We pulled the rocker covers to set the valves, how could the rocker arms get into the cover ? Seems like if it fit before it would fit after the valve adjustment. ..still...we did not hear the rattle before setting the valves..that we know of...

Tks

Well ******, Looks like Freaky and K2Berg were right, never should have taken my helmet off...never could find anything wrong with the 650, just makes a little more racket, rode it for the first time in a few months today and had forgotten how strong it is..runs like a scalded dog...

Tks for you help and recs, Guys..
