Hi Just after some advice

I am from Coffs Harbour Australia and around 190cm(6Ft2in) and 90-95KG, where we have all types of riding, tight, open, rocky, crazy hills and wet clay(I do a bit of 4WD and MTB as well).
I have the chance of getting a 2012 FE390 Berg, and I have few questions.
I am not a beginner but more of novice (I have owned a couple of DRZ400's and my last bike was 250 Sherco which I sold round 18months) is the 390 too much bike, i do have a bit of self control

. The bloke has stated that he has stripped the drain plugs on the sump is this a major problem? Or can if be fixed relatively easy with some locktite etc. Apart from that look forward any response

There are various ways to repair this like tapping it to the next sized larger bolt or using a thread insert.

Machine shops will usually do this kind of work. Sometimes you can find a shop that specializes in screw extraction and restoring threads. I would not want to attempt this myself in such a delicate area. Find someone with plenty of experience.

It probably needs what is called a helicoil and this can be done by an expert outside the bike (luckily). however most helicoils are M6, M8 and at the most M10. I guess time has moved on since I last checked and maybe they do far larger thread sizes.

whatever you do, this truly is a shot for a veteran mechanic as you get one shot at it if any shot at all (because) the last owner screwed up.

If you have had a DRZ400 this bike will be lighter (just) and more powerful but it has three adjustable power steps. just twist a knob and you get more or less.

as the button on my 570 said; mild, (standard) or wild.

I have the same problem, my plan is to get a M13 sump plug and re-tap the hole, M14 is to big in my opinion.
The smallest insert I could find so far with a M12 id has an od of M16.
I haven't looked at helicoils yet as i'm not a fan, maybe i should.

Check out a "Time Sert". They come in a lot of sizes. I've used them in head studs that go into a water jacket and there can't be any coolant seeping through.

Loctite makes Form-A-Thread Stripped Thread Repair it’s good to Metric mm Grade 8.8 for the oil drain should work fine. this is The part #28654 about $20.00 US
