New in the stable : FS570

Just picked up a fs 570 with about 40hours on with a couple of trick bits. Bike as a whole is so sweet and a day night difference to my SM610 or my 950SM. Power is so smooth and seems to go on forever.

Just a couple of things.

Speedo is not working, there is power, but no actual km/h reading.

Battery is semi dead from not being ridden, can anybody confirm the battery model number?

How often do I need to look at the valves?

Oil changes every 10 hours (racing) or 1000km? (casual riding) or should I rather dump it at 300-500km?

How long can I expect to go on a top end before rebuild is needed (casual riding)

Cheers

Steve

If the speedo dosnt work i would check the magneto in front disc,
or perhaps the cables between speedo and front caliper.
Hope that helps...

Thanks for the feedback.

Thinking of going with the motobatt version. They seem to not be so finicky with discharging.

Re. the oil - Lost Rider posted some oil analysis results in this excellent thread at ADVRider: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthre ... 94&page=31

He's been going for pretty long oil change intervals, testing and retesting: "After my last Baja run with 2800 miles on the oil, the analysis came back OK once again except for my high levels of lead caused by running a tank of race fuel and questionable mexican gasoline." (pg. 31). As of 3 days ago, the bike "hit 19k miles on this trip and still runs like a champ and burns no oil".

That is awesome news. Ill check out the thread. Ive done one run on it and i love it. Its geared silly tall but still has more than enough power to pull it.

So im guessing the 70 degree motors are pretty solid?

Clean looking bike!

Stock is crazy tall. I'd swap to a 42-45T rear.

+1 on the lithium battery. I've had my shorai battery for 16 months, all good, no drain while sitting.

Just finished an oil change on the berg. Old oil didn't look too bad at all actually.

I''ve just installed a Toplite battery and it seems to be having a hard time with the cold cranking, even though it put out more cold crank amps than the Motobatt.

Anybody have a slow swinging berg (before she fires up)

Btw, I dont suppose you can flood a FI bike, can you?

Depends, my 'Berg starts differently than my DR-Z. At room temp it starts almost immediately - faster than the DR-Z ever did - but in the cold it can spin a little and not catch, feel a little bit more sluggish and harder-firing - but then once it catches, you're done: it runs smooth immediately. (But my bike needs maintenance - it was sitting for a year or more when I bought it - air filter is dirty, filters/injectors are probably clogged, etc. etc., so it's not the typical bike.)

You know about the cold start / idle adjustment button on the throttle body, right?

Just thinking - Could you grab a video of how it starts?

Slow or hard starting? There's a good chance you might have a clogged injector. If your fuel pump is priming every time you cycle the ignition (whirs for a few seconds, then goes silent) then it's probably ok.

Most FE/FS riders (me included) will recommend an inline fuel filter (Golan or similar). If you purchase a replacement injector, it'll come with a little mini filter that goes into the fuel inlet spigot in the injector "fuel rail".

You want part #75041023144 (supersedes original part #75041023044).

I believe the filter can be ordered on it's own as #78141013190, but if the injector is already clogged, it's not going to help and a new injector includes a replacement filter anyway (see: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showpost.php?p=20558913&postcount=3320).

If you haven't already, head over to AdvRider.com and read the two main 70 degree motor threads:

This bike is driving me nutsss!

Starts when cold and immediately restarts if stalled. But as soon as it sits for 5 mins after a ride it struggles to start. Turn over seems heavy.

Voltage when off is 12.8, 13.4 when idling and 14.4 when rpm is up.

For now, ill just look at it.

could be...
-dirt in the fuel tank/lines/injector/pump
-Bad spark plug wire
-Battery not making power enough or some of the above combined...
My fs 570 now has 185 hours on the clock and only had starting problems once..
Caused by dirt in the fuel/pump/injector and needed to replace spark plug coil/wire now everything is fine again and I added a "tanksock" to prevent dirt getting int the pump in the future
Check your airfilter to!

I do maintnance every 1000km (oil/filter) I use it for everything sometimes to commute to work weekend rides and rarely a trackday.
If I would only use it for comuting I would only change it every 1500km/25 hours.
The oil Always seem to look fine when I replace it (use the one the manual recommends).
It's expensive but cheaper than early engine rebuilds because being cheap on maintnance

If hot starts is a prob, it maybe a leaky injector.
Look up ways to clean the injector, or cough up the $120 for a new kit.

That doesn't sound like anything with fueling... that sounds like a poor starter.

I've not heard of any starter issues, but it happens.

Starter part #78040001000 (stock KTM part). Ouch. Over $200 from KTM-Parts.com: http://www.ktm-parts.com/search.html?q=78040001000&x=6&y=12. But it looks like aftermarket starter can be had for less than half that from flea-bay.

If it's not the starter, then it could be the battery, but you say you've checked that? I have a LiPo battery in mine and when it's really cold, first thing in the morning, it sounds just like that for three or four stabs on the button. Then, once it's fired up I don't have a problem all day. LiPo batteries don't like the cold and need to "warm up" before they can push out the full amperage required. One thing that can help with that is to turn the ignition on and then the lights. Wait a minute, then try starting.
