anyone had a ride of the new bmw's
there was a few demos at the trail ride i went to last weekend.
you got to give it to them by thinking out side of the square a little, having things like the clutch driven straight off the crank, swing arm pivot with front drive sprocket & fuel cell under the seat.
i was suprised how tall the seat height was 970mm apparently.
i wouldn't say i'm a short arse at 6ft tall, but i was on tippy toes to touch the ground.
it also felt quite heavy, certainly heavier than my 650 berg.
apparently they are quite light on the scales.i think they are quite top heavy.
probably not as good as i expected, but wouldn't knock 1 back if i was given one.

Ah, forget Bavaria's finest, i reckon the new Berg is more revolutionary and looks better to, they just need to be a bit cheaper.
Jockular.

sammo has bought one and raced it the weekend before last. PM him.

Taffy

Btw. just heard that Salminen and Tarkkala have joined BMW. They have signed a 3 year contract. Salminen will race in class 2 and Tarkkala in class 3.

Hate to see the lads leave. On the other hand I dont recasll seeing them on the podium too often.

Salminen is only 17 time world champion in enduro.....Tarkkala came 2nd in class 3 this year. The move was from KTM to BMW.

unless you watched the WEC this year when salminen was on it more than not.
takala though does seem to need something to reinvigorate his riding.

I read somewhere the new BMW Enduro's have a lot of parts built by Aprilia...

dont know about this new bike but bmw and aprillia have worked together closely in the past. At one time all the f650 trail bikes were made in aprillia factorys in italy and aprillia ran their own version the pegaso.

also;

David Knight, Juha Salminen and Marko Tarkkala will be entering the 2009 World Enduro Championship with the BMW Motorrad Motorsport factory team.
Berti Hauser (Head of BMW Motorrad Motorsport): “We are very happy to be entering the 2009 season with this top rider line-up. The entire team is incredibly highly motivated. We are very much looking forward to getting into the 2009 season with David, Juha, Marko and the other riders.â€Â

funny thing is that you pay top dollar for the BMW and yet the engine is made in taiwan. thats a little bit of a worry.

I went trail riding for a day with a new X bike. And I did a short test ride on the bike.
Over all I very much liked the bike. Following it on single track it seem to hold the trail well. After riding it the only thing that I would change is the gearing.

It is a nice bike. If I were in the market for a WR or similar bike. I think that I would opt for the BMW.

Having said that I have owned several BMWs over the years. When used for thier intended purpose I find them to be a great product overall.

whats the story?
is the bike manufactured in Taiwan or just assembled?
the salesman there tells me its $200 cheaper than a yamaha to buy.
made in Taiwan thats probably why.
you can only hope their quality assurance checks are the equal to that of bmw in germany.
i know for instance we use topcon surveying equipment.
topcon dumpy levels made in japan are good quality,no problems with them.
topcon dumpy levels made in china are not worth a knob of goat poo.
in this case its worth paying the extra knowing that its made in japan.
if you talk to topcon about this .topcon says they have the same quality assurance protocol in japan as in china, should be no difference in theory, but there is.

I guess you guys don't read MotoVerte, the French enduro magazine. They did a shoot out with seven (7) european 450s. The new Husabling came out top, the BMW came out 5th.
From the six test riders four made their fastes lap on the Berg! I think that ilusstrates best how well the new berg handles. Husqvarna, that other BMW prouct came out last in the test.
perhaps it's an old German «» French thing, but than again, Austrians are "über germans"
The results:

1º Husaberg
2nd KTM
3rd: Beta- Sherco ex aecuo
5th: BMW
6th: Gas Gas
7th: Husqvarna

The problem with all these tests is that it is done by pro riders. Such tests should be done by a mix of average and senior hobby riders. And thats the nice thing with MotoVerte; there are also two (I believe) "reader riders"
Most riders don't use their bike to the full extent so will come up with different opinions than professional riders.
