.. should I be doing anything special after this trip besides changing oil/filter and checking valve clearances? Bike now has 5000kms and about 120 hours.

The half the ride report and pix are here, http://www.nsdsc.ca/Gallery.aspx?whichgallery=2006-09-22+and+23+Cape+Breton&back=/Gallery.aspx
if anyone wants to see it.

Thanks

These pics take a while to load but well worth the wait....see why the cape breton highlands and the cabot trail is one of the worlds most popular motorcycle on and off road destinations..great trip Kelsow!

Tell me about the bike set-up

I'm planning on doing the western half of the TransAmerica Trail next year. Because of fuel capacity issues and my own concerns about maintenance intervals, I'm thinking about getting a used XR400. However, your pictures are intriguing.

Can you tell me about the bags you're using? I'm interested in both the tank panniers as well as the saddlebags. Any issues with the saddlebags, and/or did you need to fabricate some sort of frame?

Also, what kind of range did you have on a tank. So far my riding has been generally at "invigorating" speeds, so I really have no clue what to expect from a bit more sedate trail and dual sport riding.

Great pics, btw!

The bags I used were real cheapo's and came apart at the seams because of the rough terrain. Only cost me 25 bux though. I got them at a store called Princess Auto, not sure if you have that store or not.
I didn't have any external frame for support, just the plastic. I did take some extra header tape to wrap the pipe where the bags rested.
Some of the roads traveled were because of my range but I did manage 120 kms between fill ups but prolly could have made it farther. I carried extra gas but never had to dip into it. I did travel with 2 klr's so gas wouldn't have been an issue.
I rode in a taller gear than usual just to save gas so that helped quite a bit.

I would do this again in a second but would like a more comfortable seat or wear padded cycling shorts. I would have liked to have changed my oil while on this trip but it wasn't possible.

So, any one with input as to anything else to check for?
