Just a little advice on balancer bearing

I had to make a choice between 1) fiiting a new Nachi Japanese made bearing to my existing single bearing balancer, or 2) grinding a 650 twin bearing balancer to the same shape as my 400. I went for the easy option 1) and fitted new bearing, it was rated at 17000 rpm with seals removed running in oil. I have just assembled the bottom end and fitted the head then realised that due to the balancer spinning in the reverse direction to the crank it is doing double the speed at the bearing. Is this right or am I going mad ?? What is the best option here I don't really want to split it again but it is far easier than stuffing my motor.

Hi there Dan,

You were just about to ask one of the most troublesome questions there is when it comes to the Husaberg engine and then I noticed you have a 400 - phew!

Luckily, the 400 saw very few counterbalancer bearing failures and therefore you have to worry a whole load less.

You are absolutely correct in that the bearing sees twice engine rpm but that shouldn't be a problem to you because I think you will rarely, if every see more that 8500rpm on your engine - that is going to be beyond your typical best power or torque for that engine.

In addition, your bearing is not going to be running "in" oil but only with a splash on it. I don't know what the specifications of the bearing are under those circumstances.

I would suggest that providing you aren't revving the **** off your engine and that you are careful with oil maintenance you shouldn't have a problem until a good few hours on the clock. After which time it'll be due for a tear down anyway. But that is my opinion, of course.

All the best,
Simon

as si says and don't panic! we haven't had a single 400 balancer bearing go west. the bearing carries less weight on it's back than the bigger engines BTW which must help. infact it teaches us that the revs aren't the problem perhaps but rather the load....

but that's grist to simon's mill!

Thanks for answers, unfortunately I got them a bit late, I was a mission to get it right so pulled it down again ground the 650 balancer to match and fitted that. Finished the second assembly at 3:00am this morning.

Eah?

If it's with the connotation I'm thinking, you haven't understood any of what I've been talking about

It's back togither again and going great, just been for an early moring 2.5 hour blast in the hills. Is there any way to make the 400 less thirsty ? only get about 3.5 - 4 hours out of a tank. or around 120 - 150km

120 -150km is pretty good. Try leaning it out for more range but I think it will be difficult to get much more.
