Is there a way to make a FE400 more quiet?

I bought Ned's 1998 FE400e and really love the bike. I often ride with my 9 yr old daughter next to me on her Honda XR70. It is difficult for me to coach her because the FE400 is a bit loud. Is there a way to make it more quiet. Perhaps an aftermarker muffler? I don't really care if I lose some power, the bike has more than i need already. Thanks Gary

Hi there Gary,

The only aftermarket pipes that I know of for the bike(which are quite limited to begin with) only make the bike louder...

You could fabricate something on your own, I guess, but that seems awfully extreme for something that should be simple. Maybe someone will come along with a drop-in solution, but I don't know of one offhand.

Sorry it wasn't better news :(

if the dbsnorkel is what i think it is don't bother, it has been tested by a couple of mags over here and its crap for the money. doesn't really reduce the the noise at all.

thought i better quantify my statement.

search dbsnorkel on google and one of the results is the dirt bike test of this product.
having read it, their conclusions are the same as my local rag.
that the snorkel doesn't seem to effect performance (good) but doesn't really quieten the bike down (bad).
it takes the edge off the sound. unfortunately it probably won't be sufficient for what you want it for.

Thanks for the help

Thanks for the responses. I ordered the dB Dawg yesterday. I wil let everyone know if it really makes the bike quieter. Thanks Again, Gary.

RE: Thanks for the help

saw a db dawg in a bike at the atr desert scramble on sunday. wasn't impressed. looked clean and easy to install but didn't seem all that quiet.

Another thing to try is stuffing some regular steel wool down your pipe. I've done it for short periods of time (to convince a park warden my bike was quiet). I don't know if it would melt if it got too hot, but I doubt it would. Good luck,
Aaron.

I like the dB Dawg

I bought the dB Dawg for my FE400e and it really works!!! The bike is much more quiet. Seems like $30 well spent.

RE: I like the dB Dawg

regular re-packing of the 'zorst is an oft forgotten answer. we think that the pipe we have has to be replaced when really all it needs is repacking.

regards

Taffy
