Is my berg about to die?

Just started berg after winter hibernation. Changed oil first an it looked pretty black with sludge on magnet, but only a few bits of shrapnel.

It was a pig to start. When it finally burst into life its spewed a load of oil out of the exhaust manifold, its like treacle!! This is a bit worrying

What could it be? Do they have valve stem seals? I cant think what else it could be. Theres loads of compression and 900ml of oil was pit in, didnt change filter.

The new oil looks black already through the spy glass.

Is it paggered? Paranoia is beginnin to set in so any advice is very much appreciated.
Only live a couple of miles from Dave Clarkes, but i dont wanna start bothering him yet

Re: Is berg aboit to die?

I think you need to worry!

something just isn't right.

remove the headers. does the oil come out of both zorst valves or one?

some questions will be answered from there.

is it possible that the oil was in the head slowly leaked intot he cylinder over a winter of sitting, just now noticed during the first start? like slow enough its not noticable in a few days or weak but a few months is long enough it can leak down?
was there engine noise when it was running?
i notice if i dont change my oil till 5 hours then change it, its black right away too, but if i start doing 2-3 hours oil changes it clears up after a couple of changes.
have you driven it yet to see if it burns off what oil was there and if oil is still coming, if it were me i would take it on a short ride, change the oil recheck it and moniter the situation before i go into tear down mode, maybe thats just me i do a lot of dumb things :D

With the headers attached its just coming out of the nearside one. There was a small amount coming from here before i stopped using it about 5 months ago, but it ran ok so i left it.

Its not been stood un- touched for 5 months, ive give it a few kicks every couple of weeks to keep it lubed an not stuck in one position.

I started it a few times after the original oil spurtage, an its no longer throwin oil out, just a small oil bead on the header which just seems to smoke off. It ticks over lovely and revs ok.

Not happy about it though. Dont want to risk damage. I'll turn it over with the headers off, see what this un covers. Then im gonna book it in at clarkeys. Hes got the tools and expertise, i have cash to pay him. Its easier that way :D

broken valve spring comes to mind and seized valve etc. this means unburnt fuel drools out of the weak valve seat.

Bike sorted. Took it to dave clarkes an rings were worn, plus sprag.

Anyway, hes rebuilt it an it rides a treat. In fact its never run like this! Very happy chappy :D

how do twisted ive got meself a berg yesterday! got rid of me tm, anyway how can i truly identify what engine is in my frame as the frame is a 1999 fe350 but were unsure about the engine, i need to know asap as im about to commence major clean up work on her o get her back to a1 condition, i took here out yesterday and loved every scary minute

me?

I'd stick a rod down the plug hole and find a method of measuring the stroke to within a millimetre? bore is more difficult but is usually only ever a choice of the 86mm of the 350 and the 92mm of the early 501 or later 400.

Alright john dude!! :D

Enjoy the berg la. Are your arms still in thier sockets?

Still on the lookout for a small 2 stroke off roader. Might have a look at that crm near you, looks a bit paggered though - an no log book etc

ill have a look at this rod thingy today and try measure the stroke, i set the tappets up yesterday to 0.10 is this right? as i didnt really understand the 1/6th method especially as im used to my 2 strokes.
twisted my good man, yep theyre still attatched only just ha ha ill be taking it racing in the amca with me in less than a month which is why im getting it in tip top condition
if you need me to come take a look at the crm just give us a shout mate
