That comment of yours confirms exactly what most of us are thinking - that in fact, if what bike you get is dependent on who you know then the entire UK distribution and sales channel has taken several steps back into the dark ages.
Come to think of it, the situation may therefore be a lot worse than we originally thought and it is simply even more of a balls up (even if perhaps not for you personally).
