How far on a full tank?

Hello gents,

Can anyone please tell me how far I can hope to ride on the 9 litres of fuel my Berg can take? Going out on Sunday with a bunch of local guys, all of them ride little light bikes like Yamaha Serow (225cc) and Kawasaki Super Sherpa (250cc), over tight stuff at low speeds.

I hope to get around 60 miles on the full tank, it that realistic?

Also, my gearing is probably too high for this(14/44), so I bought a 52t rear sprocket and will need to longer chain - does anyone know if a 120-link chain will be long enough? I found a gold Regina (not an o-ring) for £32, free delivery - it seems a better bet than a no-name chain...

Thanks in advance.

Hi there
I had a 04 550fe and used to run 16-48 for trail riding,on open trails cruising at 20-70kmh and every thing was standard, not giving the bike a hard time or reving its head off I got 111kms out of 5.1 litres of fuel. This was on fairly dry hard pack flat gravel conditions.
I also run the bike on a coast run incorperating open beach riding 80-90kmh , lose wooped out sand sections, rocky muddy terrain and down to 1-2 gear, more a less various terrain and got 133kms out of 8.5 litres of fuel, again the bike wasnt riden high in the rpms or full bottle.

you can do the conversions to gallens and miles stuff...
Hope this helps some

I did 50 miles with lots of climbs between 1500 and 6000 feet with my 05 FE450 two weeks ago and still had a half tank when I got back to the truck. Even if it is 5 MPH single track I would say no problem doing 60 miles.

I see about 30mpg with city riding. So maybe 65 miles before flame out.

I see about 40mpg with canyon and highway riding. So maybe 85 miles before flame out.

You could strap a small 4 litre plastic gas can to the bike just in case or for extra range.

Thanks everyone, great help as usual. Sounds like I'll be able to go with the guys for most of the way. I'm taking the GPS just in case, with that I should be able to find a petrol station if I need it.

Cheers

I'm not too familiar with all the areas of this great web site (yet), getting there, though!

Hi there V,

Don't feel bad, nobody is too familiar with the site lately, with the recent upheaval :)

Things will be much intuitive in the coming weeks for you. It's just a little hobbled right now.

thanks,

Hi bigV

I have a 2004 FE450e also and occasionally do a bit of long distance riding in Scotland. Can get about 70 miles on a tank with 14/48 gearing. I put a couple of litres in my bag if the distance between fuel is more than 60 miles and tip it in the tank as soon as there is space.
As for the chain only way to find out is fit the 120 you have. Don`t think the non o-ring will last long though.

Bill :D

With my 04 550 I have done 78 miles on 1.5 gallons. That was mostly all hard pack jeep road, cruising with fuel economy in mind.

Recently Logjump and I did 107 miles in one day average speed 16mph, that's with an extra gallon in my pack, which works out to about 31mpg. Lot's of climbs and decents mainly 2cnd 3rd, and some 4th on the trails with 15/52 gearing. That was mostly single track with about 25 miles of gravel and pavement @ 35mph. So figure you're probably good for at least 70 miles ifyou don't have a lot of deep sand, it's not all 1st and 2cnd gear, and keep fuel range in mind in your riding technique.

I have regularly done 60 to 65 miles on a tank in the desert with mixed conditions of open, single track, deep sand etc.... And still had about a 1/2 litre left when I got back.
