My bike was running great until I heard a bizarre sound from the top, then suddenly, the engine died.

Took a look on the left side: ugly oily mess under the tank. Then I saw something protruding from the rocker cover, right over the timing chain. It was the "H" from the word "Husaberg". The other letters were AWOL.

I found the shreds on the trail. One says "USAB", the other "G__" (there's about two white spaces after the lonely "G". I could not find the "ER" part. Picking up the pieces, the images of Jacky crawling on the back of the Lincoln Continental in Dallas came back to my mind.

Well, as I said, one day this bike would explode, and that might be the end of it, but coming home, I dropped the oil, removed the tank and saw that the chain was still there. The kickstart will turn by hand although meets some resistance, but it may be fixable.

I am not in the mood to open the cover now, I'll do that tomorrow (right now you can imagine my mood).

I will let you know!

Decompressor stop bolt has sheared/ come undone maybe ??

Should almost be possible too see through a hole that big........

I'm crying for ya Froggy   I know you have been working hard. My guess would be the nut came off the chain tensioner blade. But on the brightside, it would be a great time to upgrade the E-start. Good luck and my the VISA be with you. :(

Oh, here, I almost fixed it! I bet I can get that "ER" part, then just a bit of JB Weld and it will look like new.

Oh Man! I am sorry Froggy. wish there was some way i could help... keep us posted on what you plan to do

i hate to say it froggy but i'm guessing that a locknut has come off and if it's any consolation; that's what happened to me about 3 years ago.

I read somewhere that these chainsaws and chain drives in general are the fastest moving mechanical parts and now I believe it. It has to take a huge amount of momentum for a little lock nut to rip through aluminum like that. It would take a 9mm or a .357 to do the same damage with a hand gun.

Good thing I was riding like 5 minutes away from my house.

I Second That

"i'm guessing that a locknut has come off"
Via broken tappet, inadequate torque or freak of nature I agree with the above quote.

Unlike the Husaberg main bearing bores camshaft bores are indeed line machined. Such being said it makes little difference as the bores are what align the cover. Go figure.

In a pinch and if need be you can salvage the cover. Simply "weld a thin patch strip" over the "Very Clean" and "Well Prepared" hole.

Dale

PS
For what it may be worth:
Husaberg let loose with a batch of bad tappet screws in the late nineties. Such was quite the common site.

RE: I Second That

What material is the cover made of, Dale? I said aluminum but I wonder if it is not some sort of magnesium alloy?

Cast Aluminum.
When prepared properly (IE clean) readily Tig welds with most any Aluminum alloy rod.

Froggy, there have to be enough bergs that have become parts bitches that someone has to have another valve cover they'll sell you cheap.

Well, if someone knows of one, please let me know.

I'd like to know if someone from the UK, someone from Sweden and someone from Germany could post a Want it Now in their languages on these sites?

If you can get a rocker cover for me from your local eBay and ship it to me, I can pay you for your service!

Thank you!!!

mr le frog sir

sorry to hear of your misfortune , if it is of any consolation to you i am in the process of counselling a good friend of mine whose berg did the very same thing - 2000 model .

the cause was related to the decomp system going A.W.O.L .

Bummer about your rocker cover froggy. Hope you're able to either find a used one at a reasonable price or patch up your original. Also hope there isn't much other damage inside
Christmas is coming up. Maybe it's time to give the wife some hints about a new fe550! jk

what about the rest of the bike froggy? what was the cause and do you think by taking the left cover off you can account for most of the debris?
