Froggy joins the Kablamoh club.

I have not had the guts to gut it yet.

I actually fear the worst but I have only one way to find out.

Soooooo... will an 04-06 fit, or do I need absolutely to get an 01-03? I can get a new one for about 200 to my door.

the later ones have two breathers instead of the one. i can't think of any other reason why it shouldn't fit. anyone else?

froggy
e-mail all the dealers
go into history in ebay and look for old motors you've checked out.

Mr. Frog

Be careful.

Pre 2001 Husaberg engines drive their water pump via the camshaft. Covers do not interchange with that of post 2000.

in addition pre 2001 engines have two different water pump (ie pump case) dimensions depending on year and model.

RE: Mr. Frog

Yes, I saw it was a pre-01, I would have passed. But thanks anyway. I have been looking at all the eBay sites around the world, nothing so far. Also spammed the dealers already.

RE: Mr. Frog

One of the locknuts fell from the top of a valve adjustment screw. It was picked up by the timing chain, came down and in the way bent the screw holding the tensioner backward, sheared the tensioner, came back up and shot through the top.

I think it did some minor damage to the cylinder head, which has a slight bend. I guess it's just bad it had to happen. It seems that I either have to have the head readjusted or maybe somehow I can bend it back. Or replace it. $$$

I did not have the M5 wrench, therefore I can't remove the camchain tensioner tonight.

So that's where I am, for once I did not overtorque and, well, maybe I should have.

Little mistake, big damage.

Condolences Froggy! Keep yer head up, that .357 missed you so you'll live and ride long.

oops welcome to the club thou :(

my 02 did this when decompressor stop bolt sheared
things i learnt

after 04 you have to buy cylinder head and rocker cover complete about £300

02 you can get them seperate about £60 ----but you cant get one :x

the later sprocket has a solid stop -----get one

get someone to weld a cap on top mine is fine ill try and put a pic up of it
mine was a lot worse all the mating edge was taken out so i got one that looked like yours and got it welded
engineer who did mine said it was good to weld
good compared to jap stuff apparantly

chin up its not sooo bad

Thanks, Johnnyboy, but unfortunately my cover cannot be welded, I am afraid. There is a crack which runs from the "H", through the breather hole and through the hole that holds the compression rocker. See the photos below.

Now I think it happened this way. The nut shot through the top, but in the mean time, bent the screw that holds the tensioner lever (that long plastic part), which rendered the chain slack. The chain then gnawed the ceiling of the cover, finished the job by making the gash bigger and making that nice crack. Or something like that. The locknut is nowhere to be found.

That was my Hercule Poirot moment.

So here is the plan:

1-Fix the issue with the tensioner "lever" (aka slipper, tension arm, plastic thingy, etc...): I already hammered (yes, I took my precautions) the side of the cylinder head back into so-so shape, it's already much better. I "machined" a washer out of a drilled out rivet head, to give it a slant. Hammer, anvil, vise and Dremel: that's my machine shop, so by "machined" I mean "improvised". The washer will be inserted between the bolt head and the hole, to help make it real straight. It's already done but I am not super happy with the current slanted washer, I am going to see if I can make a better one. (I used a drilled out rivet head to make that washer).

2-Upgrade the tension arm with the newer part (although the current one is still reusable after I cut out the plastic crapula, I'd rather upgrade, as advised).

3-Get a used or new cover, if that is still possible. I'd rather not buy a new cylinder head, as I have an 01.

4-Do the compression lobe upgrade advised by Ady.

5-Put a new locknut.

6-Put it all together.

7-Readjust the valves and tighten the stupid locknuts really good this time.

8-Go ride.

mr le frog sir

have you checked out the 07 models ??? --- time to upgrade , you know with the wind in you hair ,-etc .

Why replace when you can fix and ride on?

Also, if I had $8000 to spend, I would buy something else.

that's what i've always liked about you froggy. cut you in half and you'd be yellow and blue through and through......

By "buy something else" I mean something else than a new dirt bike.

Again, European attitute. I can keep the same car or bike for 10 years as long as it runs...

Alright, it seems that I will be able to sort it out. Besides the tiny scrape on the tensioner arm and the bent bolt, which I fixed tonight, all I needed was a rocker cover and good thing our friend Peter from HMS has a couple of those in stock.

No damage in sight anyway, I will have to retightened the timing chain and fix the cover.

Meanwhile I will do a couple upgrade (tensioner arm and Ady's decomp upgrade).

Hopefully it will be sorted out soon.

froggy, it hurt me so much to pay for something new when i couldn't see what was wrong with the old.....i bought a new chain when it happened to mine. please consider a new chain.

you're not 100% sure what happened and if for any reason the chain got excessively stretched then it is now fatally weakened.

plus you'll be coming up to the D.I.D so that's an improvement.

if you handle this whole thing right you'll be good for a long while. for instance, get the new tensioner blade and there is no "question" that the cylinder head can stay on the bike for a long time and as maintenance comes around: it will all be in the rocker cover!

Yes I was reading your doc about this yesterday evening. Should I upgrade the tensioner as well?

Froggy

if i was strapped for cash i'd happily get an old one - used. any year from 2001 will do. you implied that yours was damaged, i doubted this but please confirm? if nothing wrong with it physically then DON'T replace it!
