He is 11 and has a YZ 85. I geared it down a lot and put a flywheel weight on it. He is just starting to get the hang of it. Hills are not his strong point.

I found for Joshua, that going to a smaller rear sprocket helped him on his 65. It smoothes the hit and helps him climb hills better because the bike doesn't wheelie as much when he is climbing hills. When we tried a large rear sprocket, the bike was a wheelie machine and he would over compensate by chopping the throttle and then the bike would stall. The smaller rear sprocket allows him to give it more gas, attack with more momentum, and keep the front wheel in contact with the dirt. He doesn't stall nearly as often with the smaller rear sprocket.

The Sovereign Trail System seems like a perfect place for an easy ATV ride while still getting the feel of Moab. The singletrack trail loop is only 13 miles so we know that the Bergs won't run out of gas :) .

That picture is VERY misleading. There is a 'B' section and an 'A' section of trails. Also, the 13 miles is not continuous, you have sections that are seperated and connected by the ATV trails, so the loop will take a couple hours. There is also a more difficult trail from the same staging area that is over 20 miles that will take a couple or 3 hours to ride.

.... I have poison spyder mesa loaded as a track log and behind the wall also. I think the poison spider mesa is an A or B level trail or maybe C if you keep to a slow pace and take breaks...

Poison spider has a series of step ups that I was told were too large for my son's 85sx, so I think they would definitely be classified as a 'B' ride. Most of the Jeep trails that are rated a 4 or 5 have large step ups, keep that in mind. we rode a 3 and it had a series of 3 foot step ups. Had we run in from the opposite direction, it would have been a breeze, just ride down the steps, but going up them was a different story. 8O

Thats why we will differ to you since you have been there. I'm still up for at least one day of explore the complete unknown. Like I said before we need different groups and if we can get a few gps's everyone will probably be more comfortable. I was just finding tracklogs in the area to help with my map reading. I really do better with nothing and getting lost is part of the adventure as long as I have a general idea where the truck is. I can have all the A and AA single track I want here in the High Sierra. For me this trip will be about enjoying company making new friends and seeing the sights.
Most of all I'm looking forward to meeting all the people here and the bench racing around the camp fire will be lively I'm sure.

My comments regarding Poison Spider were not to discourage, just to pass along information.

I only know a small amount of trails. As you have probably seen or read, it is impossible to discover, explore or ride all the trails in Moab in one or two trips. I will offer my limited knowledge for your information and decision making benefit only, not as a "this is what we are going to do" attitude.

I would like each person to offer as many or few suggestions of trail choices as each person wishes to contribute. For the people that want to leaving the scouting to someone else, I will be happy to share my experience.

For the people interested in scenic views and photo ops, Gemini Bridges is a fun ride, quad trail with postcard picture taking opportunities.

Splatt:

Have you done the Slickrock trail? Or the practice part?

Does it have any step ups? Riding it backwards is supposed to be easier but from what I have read on the internet some claim it to be harder. Because of the step ups perhaps?

Check this thread out. All I did was ask and every one seemed to come through. Remember the commercial in the sixties for honda? It's true you do meet the nicest people on a bike. Not just a Honda

http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/index.php?

Some great info about the trails in the area. Now I am sure we will have just the right kind of riding for everyone and plenty to see.

These are some of the easier rides I am looking at that my wife and son can probably ride:

Hurrah Pass

Picture Frame Arch

Balcony Arch

Monitor/Merrimac 13.2 mile loop

Copied from TT

Easy trails = Hoorah Pass, Klondike Bluffs (has Dinosaur tracks), Gemini Bridges
Moderate = Monitor/Merrimac, Bartlett Wash, Hell's Revenge/Slick Rock bike trail
Difficult = Behind the Rocks, Steelbender, Slickrock, Poison Spider, Kane Creek Canyon, Porcupine Rim Trail,

I hope eveyone is making a wish list of where you want to ride.

Some other good riding areas are 1 to 2 hours away.
I would be interested in a day trip to some, or one, of the other riding areas if others in the group agree.

Help!!!

I have a problem getting to Moab for Thurs am for Taffy to have a bike to ride. I coach a grade 7-9 basketball team and their league playoffs are the evenings of the 1 and 2. I am leaving immediately following the games say 7 or 8, but I have 3 guys to pick up and an 18 hr drive. My eta is later aft on Thursday.

So, does anyone have an extra bike for Taffy for the day? He will be revved up and ready to go Thurs AM.

Dumb mistake on my part with schedules so I hope someone can help.

Thanks

Fry

Taf's chariot

Fry,

It's my understanding that there will be enough spares around for him to mount until you get there. It wouldn't do to have him back at camp unsupervised. I'd hat to think what he'd do to my stuff :)

Just kidding taf, please don't verbally abuse me :D

thanks,
json

Taffy I'll let you break my 501 so I wont feel bad and then I can tow you back with the drz. I'm sure you wont have to be camp bitch on the first day.
See ya on Wed. pm

Camp Bitch! Don't make me giggle at poor Taffy. But I'm sure he can take as well as he can deal!!

Thanks for the backup, I was sweating for a little while.

The energy seems to be gathering for the gathering. It will be cool to hang and meet the 'gang'.

Since the 24, it is a more fun to email etc with guys that I met there and I'm sure this forum is going to be revved right out after this is all over. This guy crashed there, this guy hhhhhh over there blah blah

CAN'T WAIT to meet you all, oops pardon, yahl eh

Isn't this so typical.

The Brits come unprepared.

The Canucks are a day late and a dollar short.

But the Americans pull it together and save the day.
