hi all,
ive recently purchased another husaberg. the 2003 fe650 super moto. couple of things, its a pain to start broke kick start shaft so only have electric start now and thats a no go with these from cold i know :( what are they like being bumped off though does anybody know? ive heard that the kick start shafts pre 04 are crap? is there an alternative then? also noticed water pump seal has gone so need to replace that too when do kick start shaft. is there anything else i should know or look out for? any advice on starting this one. on my fe450 2005 have none of these problems she's been very well maintained and starts first kick every time :)

05 has a fcr carb correct... 03 has to old school delorto they work ok just not the same and not a pumper carb also the 03 has a necked down kick shaft total crap... Get one off an 05 direct fit easy job.. Also the 03. 650 needs some what of a starting procedure similar to an old xr600

I've been having a tough time learning to kickstart my 2006 650 and... Been doing a lot of research and it seems riders have different techniques for starting. I would think there would be one proper way to start a 650 but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Any thoughts why there are different approaches to firing up the beast?

My method that worked 99% of the time was..

Choke on
wot
decompressolever pulled roll over engine 5-6 times on estart
find tdc use decomp to get right past
no throttle at all
full length kick
should fire even bone cold this way

SpencerGT66, you mentioned you let the e-start 5 or 6 times. Are you keeping your finger on the kill button so it doesn't fire up?

^ no offence, but why would you not want it to fire up?

I thought the whole 'knack' thing was the same on all bikes?

Decomp and find tdc, full kick with no throttle. Do this 10 times before you realise youve not turned ignition on

Just to confuse the issue....... (04 650)

1. Gas on.
2. Full Choke.
3. Just past TDC (as the decomp lever starts to get pushed by the cam lobe).
4. Two squirts with the pumper.
5. One good kick all the way through (even with jandals after bike been sitting for a couple of months).
5a. If the first kick fails...... then I remember to turn the key on and give it another kick.
6. Swing leg over seat and away (after a warm up obviously).

P.S I have to use my right foot coz my left leg aint strong enuff after my foot got knocked off it.

I think spencer has it right
My 05 650 will start with one easy kick.
Before I learned the trick I would kick it several hard times to get it going.
Here's the steps.
Gas on.
Choke on if cold.
2 quick blips of the throttle if cold. ( I blip it with the E-start when cold also.)
Push down on the kickstarter with your foot until you reach the stiffest area
of the stroke.
Then stop and use the decompress lever to just edge it past the stiff area. (Barely past.)
Then with the kickstarter at the top kick it through and it starts right up.
Repeat steps if it doesnt start .

I have never had a pre start or back fire or any attempted start with the decomp pulled just rolling engine over. This has been the best method I have found with most consistent results. Not saying this is the way is has to be done but by far has been the most effective for me...... Nothing worse then wasting half your energy to get the pig lit

Also mine was a 03 so it had a delorto carb you can blob the throttle 1-2 time if you have a fcr pumper and skip the rolling over, the only point of this is to draw gas into the cylinder sice the delorto has no accelerator pump
