fe550 durability - new owner

Hello to all - i am new in this forum.

This week i am going to buy new bike. I have very good deal on fe550 2007. Only 2600km on it.
I have never had exp with bergs. How many km/miles i can do on it without rebuilding top end? Is durability similar to ktm exc 525 ? i ride mostly fireroads in woods. I had yz 250 2t before and i dont want to do AGAIN those all rebuilds every 50hours - dont have time and money for it. Is it possible to do about 10k-15k between replacing top end- or maybe more :) ?

if you rev it a lot the crank spreads and SKF roller mains will probably fail around 75hrs, replace with NTN rolllers or C3 balls set up properly and it should last a very long time about 3-400 hours or more. there are 501/550 bergs out there with over 30 000km

some have issues with intake valves they are the same as the KTM 525, so are the mains. you could also try preloaded annular balls like the ducati, search KTMtalk for info on this

the 550 has the heaviest crank out of the 450/550/628 and small diam crank pin, coupled with the high rpms it wants to do and not enough end float the crank spreads, pinches the rollers up against the lip on the inner race, the rollers skid and the mains fail.


ie the top end isn't the weakest link

i like it bushie
shim them in and give them plenty of endfloat thats why mine last longer after a rebuild.
KTM saw this bearing problem in the RFS engine in 2001-2002 and a bulletin was sent out to all dealers saying give them more enfloat and after that all those egines were reliable right through to 2007.

yep I have the remains of a 550 that ate its mains 3 times before it saw 150hrs repaired by the same guys twice, same problem every time just not enough end float and SKF bearing failure

The roller end radius on the NTNs is about 5 times larger than the SKF

IMHO that is why they handle axial loading better.

also they are speced 46 micron radial clearance and everyone Ive seen is 46 microns. the SKFs are speced 58microns but Ive seen 30 to 70.

Caflash of KToomtalk has tried using skf inner with the NTN outer, home made C4s ! very clever :idea:
 
I'm still schooling everybody on my 06 550 I bought in 09. Over 5000 miles(speedo broken for a while), no valve job yet, I haven't taken the carb off, under water 2 times, 5 back tires and I still try to do everything in a stand-up wheely.
