fe400 ignition fixed, then it blew up!

Hi

Got the niggly suspected ignition fault fixed with me 99 electric start 400 enduro and just as it was running ok, the bloody thing exploded....

Aaaagh..........

Suspected broken piston and/or conrod, though I s'pose the first goes automatically with the second thinking about it - something solid put a little crack in the crankcase straight underneath the crankshaft centreline when it broke anyway, right next to the case joint.

Here's my dilemma - I'd like to fix it really but electric start 99 bikes are rare-ish in the UK and I'm not that bothered about an electric start in principle.

So......would a non-electric start motor fit, because I've got more of a fighting chance of getting a second hand one for a sensible price?

I've read various threads about engine swaps but dont know enough myself about soptting the differences and what to look for. If the frame is different, can it be sensibly (read reasonably easily) modified with new engine plates/dextrous welding etc....

Any pointers/help would be much appreciated. Whilst I really want the full blooded husa experience (which I didnt get cos of the ignition fault when I bought it), I'm just not prepared to just keep chucking money at a 99 bike....

Cheers in anticipation and hope

Chris

don't know what £ you have but '03 400's are going for betwqeen £1500 and £2000.
paid £1500 for mine and luv it. might be a better deal than spending money on the older bike.

Non-estart '99 motor should need to have the front engine mounts changed on the frame to fit into the e-start frame but I think all else should work OK. The exact job you mention was done by wildbill about 12 months ago.

Also, the non e-start motor will have no balancer shaft and will tend to vibrate more.

If you need any tips to do this you can either post or pm me and I will help as I can. I changed from a e-start 501 to a kickstart only 501. Actually it took longer to remove the swingarm shaft and front engine bolts to remove the old engine than anything else. Overall not a bad job.
Good luck.

Can you give me a clue as to whats involved in "changing" the front engine mounts in simple terms?

Am adequate with a spanner but not brilliant.....

Cheers
