How much should an engine rebuild cost? I've taken the engine out of the frame and will happily put it back in but want to know how much a refresh of all the bearing and gaskets maybe piston and valves would cost.

you're still about then keiran? i thought you were outing it last time i heard?

your engine shouldn't need a rebuild yet so what do you think like that for?

as far as time, i should say that with everything laying there you can do it in a day but the parts rarely sit there and nothing fits smoothly. just fitting a new big end means it won't be done in a day.

a gasket set £120 i think, mains £50, cam bearings £12, piston £100, camchain £40, CFBs £35 each.

the killers are; con rod kit £250, inlet valves £125 for two.

Get them 37's made - $55AUD each.
You guys seem to pay a bit for your bearings over there as well.

A bloke made mine for my 2002 FE400 based in Brisbane i think.
Was same price as coastie....

I just rebuilt my 05 fe 650, I replaced the piston, rings, bore, rod kit, main bearings, clutch plates, timing chain, and gaskets. The machine shop cleaned up the head, valves and seats looked great as well as pulled the crank apart to install the rod kit. I also removed the engine from the frame to save a few $; parts, machine shop, and mechanic time cost me about 1600 USD. With today's exchange rate, I think that is 4 British Pounds or 12 Euro.

then you were robbed LOL!!!!

the 35s are way cheaper coz they are in katooms as well whereas the 37s are unique and we must therefore pay for that uniquenessssssss!

hi, i took my engine out and posted it to dave clarke racing in preston where he completely stripped it, replaced all the valves, piston rings, all the bearings and he checked the whole thing over and posted it back to me for just over £500! he's a nice bloke to speak to as well, very helpful and easy to talk to!

I agree, never met the guy but have had some long and very helpfull phone conversations with them.

an 07 550 rebuild after mains failure cost approx 5000 AUD at a berg haters bike shop.

huge price differences depending on the degree of love given to the brand. bit over 2000 AUD should be about right.

I guess never let someone touch a berg if they don't love them

i've asked to have a look on the premise I might need mine done real soon, no love. I smell a rat

I do know that they don't rebuild cranks so I guess thats an extra 1500, then 1000 hassle factor cause bergs are soooooo hard to work on and its a berg haters price.

I'd freight my engine to orange and back for hundreds and save thousands ............ could even send the crankcases OS to ben ballard and have it come back as a 850 for that price!

5000 AUD? Go somewhere else where they are not idiots.
What would they actually do for that money? Rebuild, painstakingly polish and crome plate it? Gold would be cool, its probably within the budget too.
Yes, Orange county choppers would probably be a cheaper option. Or did you think of KTM Mattighofen orange in Austria? Or send it to england and have the big bore installed at the same time. regards.

Instead of local clowns charging lots of money   and taking the piss out of our mighty machines for being expensive to fix     the place of choice for bergs is

Orange N.S.W Australia about 3000Km from me by road

home to orangebergs KTM and polaris the most genuinely helpful guys I've ever had dealings with for any new product and the place to get the kurtz waterpump seal carrier kit.

big thumbs up !!!

Any recommendations for who to send an engine to in the US for a rebuild? Mine is an 05 fe550. Only 4500 miles because I've mostly been riding my new 200 (4700 offroad miles in 12 months), but eventually I'm going to need some work on it, and I understand quite clearly that my skills lie in riding and quick easy wrenching, not in serious work.

I would be interested in absolute maximum reliability and durability. Performance not really an issue since it's a 550 and I weigh only 175 lbs (i think that's like 1.7/sqrt 2 stone or something).

Velo,
Closest to you / Best, BOSS or Bikebarn, I'm pretty sure Rick does full re-builds, don't know about Kurt but sure respect his knowledge probably both good places to start. Hell bite the bullet and send it to Taffy !

do any aus berg owners recommend a parts retailer for a rebuild??? my engine will be stripped by the end of the week. going to do bearings while it's apart too. has anyone used cbc or similar for bearings or is it best to go through a husaberg/ktm shop??!! i'm tipping i can only go through my berg shop for everything else.
