Hi all

I've seen this subject addressed, but never cleared, specially for the 2001/2002 engines, because the 2003 engine will be different outside (magnetic bung, and head bleeder screw).

My idea is that all of you that still has this bikes put here your engine numbers, and that way we will figure it out.

I've made a search and based on the numbers that I will show, I have a theory, but is yet to be confirmed.

So

My bike 2002 FE400E - Nº 4012709 - 401 (FE400) 2 (2002) 709 (serial number)

Edelweiss engine, FE400 doesn't know the year - 4013198 - for me 401-3-198, so I would say it's a 2003 FE400

Dannyboy bike 2003 FC550 - Nº553311 so 553 (FC550) 3 (2003) 311 (serial number)

A friends bike that I thought it was a FX 470 - 2001 but number 4722030, so for me 472 (FX? 470) 2 (2002) 030 (serial)

Pictures of cases that I saw on ebay
the vendor says FC470-01, engine number 472 1 011
the vendor says FC470-02, engine number 472 2 004

This two confirms my theory

I also have seen one casing with 473 1 011, this one I would say it was one 470, maybe this one was the FX not FC ?? from 2001.

I think you all understood my theory, now if you all add your knowledge I'm sure we will come to a conclusion.

A fine initiative, sir. Posted this to a local enduro group, maybe someone will chime in.

I haven't a clue what your theory is but will happily check my 2001 for you. Is it that number across the head you need?

**edit** after reading it again I see your theory :)

Hi

Thank you elsonoro, hoping to get a lot of numbers :D

One other thing I thought, probably I'm getting greedy  , but if the theory confirms, we could try to establish something else. My engine serial number should be 709 and it's double bearing on the counterbalance, so we could presume at least that all of the 02 - 400's with serial number bigger than 709 should all have double bearing.

Please post your engine numbers with all the info that you have.

If we arrive to a decent conclusion this should be added to the owners docs.

Thank You

Ok, update.

2x 2002 FC550 engines.

First (supermoto) engine, no serial number??? :?:

Second (enduro) engine, ground off the s/n and re-punched another s/n? (previous owner did)

so.....

Hi
Thanks a lot Elsonoro ! No engine number ?? Welcome to HUSABERG :D :D

Maybe there could be a logic reason for that, don't know if you bought the bike new ??, but if someone would buy a new set of engine cases, they probably won't come with a serial number ??

About the other engine, I don't know about the erased number, but the number that you have it's in it's normal position, and it would check out:

553 - FC550
2 - 2002
135 - serial number

Thanks for your input

Thanks Tamas

It checks out, as I have eared the 651 code was for the 650CC. I just don't know if the FE/FX/FC/FS makes any difference ??

But for now it would be:

651 - 650
3 - 2003
353 - serial number

Please send more numbers to confirm

Did all 2003 engines get the magnetic bung? I thought only FS engines got it...

FE 501 E 2002 (as bungless as ever... )

Nick I really don't know if all 03 bikes had magnetic bug. But the 03 engines cases had a different part numbers from the 01/02. Maybe someone can clear that.

About your number, it's a new CC, but everything checks:
501 - 501
2 - 2002
599 - serial

Yours also check 401- FE400 / 1 - 2001 / 367 - serial.

Thank You guys
I think we are getting somewhere.

hi zaga

this all seems to work but as usual i have a number that makes no sense !

i have what i thought was a full 94 600 the frame is 100% 94 but i think it was bergini pointed out that the 94 motors never had an oil pump , well mine has ? so it must have a newer engine fitted .

but i cant make any sense of the engine number it is

1121025

the engine runs on a mk1 stator so its at most a 98 but it has an oil pump so it cant be any older than 97, but the engine number makes no connection to the facts

what do you think ?

Hi

Thank you all for your answers.

For now I think we can have a relative confidence in this system: ***-x-*** (cc-year-serial)

For now I think we can establish this:

401 - FE400
472 - FC470
501 - FE501
553 - FC550
651 - FX/FE650

But here I have some doubts, for example I had here one set of cases, sent by Taffy, that had 473. They had to be from one 400 or probably one 470 but a different model ???
So I would say the first 3 numbers could define also the model or variation of the engine, not just CC of the engine.

Or probably the system is: XX-X-X-*** (CC)-(model)-(year)-(serial).

So we would need more engine number to try to set this right.

Kris, this system only applies to 01-03, I think, so for the first generation until 2000 I think it's a different system.
I don't have here with me my older engines, but if I remember they have 2 numbers, one on the cases and one on the cylinder, maybe we will have to play with both ??

But it would be even more interesting to be able to understand the first generation of engine numbers, because there a lot of cases like yours, of owners that don't really know the year of the engine, specially with the older ones.
So to start that, we need engine numbers, of engines that the owners have sure of the year and model.

So please keep sending them

650 supermoto 2002
# 6512597

and my dads 501 enduro 2002
# 5012659

my 2002 650 motox is not here at the moment but when she's back ill post that number aswell

cheers kris

Hi

Kris I presume that the number that you have sent me is the number engraved not the one that is from the cast mould, because that obviously they can't change and I think that this engine cases are all the same for all CC's ???

As I told I don't have my older engines here with me but searched and found one pict. of the 600.
So it's a 98 FE600Elduro for sure, and the number in the cast mould is 220046, but the one that I think it's the real serial number (the one engraved), and it's placed over that one, is 1091246.

I really can't make nothing off it, maybe with some more we will.

Any ideas ??

Tamas
all my bikes have their numbers but unfortunatly i dont live in an ideal world so i dont have a super sized garage to keep them all in.

zaga

iv had a look at the numbers that are cast and mine read 220048 then i checked the other side and on the l/h crank case just below the clutch cover there is another number cast in that reads 220049.
i should imagine that the number on the l/h side of your motor is 220047, well if all these cast numbers are different does that mean that my engine and your engine were built side by side yours just before mine??
your cast numbers r/h 220046 l/h ( my guess ) 220047
my cast numbers r/h 220048 l/h 220049
but i am little unsure of this as i think i remember that your 600 is the electric start model and mine is a kick only, maybe these numbers are the difference between the models ??

cheers kris
