Dirt Rider Message Board Challenge

We may be talking about two different things here.
Later in the year, we'll be submitting a BLING-BLING-ed bike to DR for a series of articles called "Dream Bikes". BOSS will be building it, and we'll be stickings tonnes of useless aftermarket crap on it :)

Best regards,

Brett Saunders

p.s. yes I know I said bling.
Very cool idea. The Husaberg is an incredible stock package, and if you throw the same $$$ at it as you do the other brands, they still can't catch up. Honestly the Hbg doesn't need bling. Fry (and BOSS) can confirm that the fe550 with factory level (or at least WP SXS or Ohlins) suspension and a Ti Ako exhaust along with the estart removed is plenty of bling and will give ANY bike a run for the money ANYWHERE (desert, mx, or enduro).

I wonder why does a magazine want to promote an internet website?
What do they get from it?
Seems like terrestrial radio promoting satellite radio.
How do you build a bike by consensus and not get an abortion?
This whole notion seems kinda weird, or is it just me?
Maybe Jimmy Lewis wants everyone to build unridable bling piles that will fuel the flame wars of internet vs. magazines.

It will definitely get people talking about Dirt Rider Magazine on the forums. Almost free advertising. Also perhaps they know something that others don't regarding the buying power of the people who frequent these forums. Can't hurt to make nice with the forums as Dirt Bike Magazine is clearly going in the other direction, at least here. Dirt Bike used to be the premier magazine with Dirt Rider way behind. I don't think that is the case any longer.

Maybe it's all the trash talking that the forums do about how much the US mags suck. I think that DR has a great idea about how to get some loyalty back as well as see what bikes the forum veiwing public is interested in. I don't think that the bikes selected will be that big of a surprise though.

Good point. BOSS and I are both very minimalist about bolts ons. The bike comes complete with the essentials to make a very solid package.

That being said, the buying public likes to 'bolt things on' both the 24 hr and this forum challenge feed that buying habit. There certainly are great products out there that either accentuate performance or protect the bike. All those that you stated are about all you need to elavate the bike to factory status.

not being a mag editor, I can only surmize DR's reasons for this are:

1.) you need fresh copy every month - why not do this
2.) connects DR with the masses in a neat new way
3.) see 1 above...I mean I don't think there is an evil plot here just another brainstormed idea for the mag, they need fresh copy and someone probably suggested this as a fun new idea and it got approved.
4.) last year it was bali trips for DR this year internet board bikes, next year....pet tricks.what ever

In Dirt Riders editorial a few months back it was stated that they evaluate a bike on its merit and are not unduly influenced by certain manufactures. They obviously hear the roar in the backround crying foul and are trying to distance themselves from manufacturer influence. Before the internet was born it was almost impossible to validate what the magazines were telling us. But now things are quite different. If Dirt Bike tells you how great the Powernow gizmo is or that the Boyesen Quick shot is a must have marvel we know better and their credibility begins to erode. Will the informed buying public take their advice when making a new motorcycle purchase. Probably not any more.

There was an exercise I did in a class where you had to give 5$ cash to a stranger, no children or bums.
Try walking down the street giving 5$ away some time.
Perhaps Jimmy Lewis is handing the web guys 5$.
Our community could use the reunification.
This notion of building a bike that represents a website still looks like a fools errand...
Motorcycle people are individuals by design, IMHO, group think bikes end up like aberations.
Build it for them, build it for us, try to win a competition, what are the real goals?
I am glad to sit this first round out and just armchair, which is perhaps my best quality!

My 2 cents worth is this: What is one persons gold mine is anothers junk pile. I would be very leery about this. It all depends on who slips them the most money.
