taffy;
on my 02fe650e i noticed an immediate change in the starter when i switched batteries.
the original YTX5L-BS spun the motor a little slower and the starter
stayed engaged all the time. as soon as i put in the YTZ7S the starter
spun faster but it would disconnect after less than a full revolution.
what i am trying to say is that i think the new battery provides too
much juice to the starter too quickly.
just a thought.

I bought my bike with 1300KM on it and the starter always turned the motor. I have made several oil changes with Mobil 1 and my starter spins freely when I push the starter button. When I get home I will be changing to a new oil and will see if that has an effect on the starter sprague clutch.

Well I finally made it home. After 8.5 months in the basement it was time to get the 650 back on the trail. After charging the battery, chainging the oil, topping off the radiator, and putting fuel in the tank it started on the third kick.

I replace the Mobile 1 with Motul 5100 Ester SAE 15W50 Synthetic Blend. After about five miles the starter now turns over the engine (when cold and hot).

Should I be concerned about using a blend?

I have to agree with Splat and would run good Synthetic oil as recommended. Synthetics don't make things slip, but do decrease engine wear on heavily loaded parts, including the starter Sprague. Additives in the form of friction modifiers do make things slip. If you don't want to research all the additives\properties of your oil, be totally safe by running a bike oil and look to be sure the bike manufactures have accepted it as not being too slippery for starters and clutches. This is designated by a JASO rating of MA.
