Decompression Issue

Was out on the 2002 650SM last night in cold weather hacking it along at about 70mph  and she stopped firing but continued turning over. After pulling over I tried to restart using the kick start but she appears to mechanically lock :?

The decomp cam on the side of the head can be moved quite easily and doesn't appear to contact the rocker.

The bikes running an Omega high comp piston, ported big valve 03 head and GW G2 cam. She was rebuilt 30 hours ago and was fitted with a new bob weight but was left with the original manual / kickstart decomp cam.

Anyone had a similar problem ?

Will strip her down later.

Yes, on my 2000 501, I broke an intake valve spring. Same symptom except I was only going about 20 mph. It locked up after a few turns of the Crank (clutch in).

Bent intake valve, bent intake rocker arm, broken valve spring (3 pieces), keeper locked into the timing chain and crank shaft sprocket.

I suggest not trying to brute force the engine to turn over. Remove the valve adjust covers and have a look, then take it from there!

Best Regards,

Joe

OK I just took the rocker cover off, she appears to have dropped one of the 1mm over size exhaust valves (32.5mm)

The top of the valve appears to be higher than the others and wobbly :?

Anyone know the cost / outcome of this ?

I'm thinking the pistons ok, maybe marked but I think I will probably need another cylinder head / valve guide plus valve.
