Cylinder head strip...

Bought an 06 650 at the start of the season and had it stripped to check it out, all was good so fitted new mains and rings as a precaution. First time out boiled the engine due to leaving the track and overheated it trying to get back on track!:( About 120°c!, I should of knocked the motor off but the adrenaline was pumping!:(
Since then the engine has smoked, not steam but oily smoke, not excessive just a puff on the over run so have stripped the head from the motor hoping it's just the valve guide seals?

Top of the piston, oily as expected, looks like a little oil in the valve pockets.

Piston Elko 2406. 2. 99.96 btw
My hunch is that it is the guides but is there a way of eliminating the oil ring as the problem? Seems unlikely but I rather not split the cases unless I really have to.

Left exhaust valve?

Maybe the inlet valve seals has gone (probable cause for oil into combustion chamber) and the dark exhaust valve is not properly tight. But if you have run that hot for a period of time, I'm afraid the piston/rings/liner/small end maybe don't look like they should...

Just experienced the exact same problem myself, oil in the combustion chamber. Ugh, I too hope it's the valve seals. However, as Dr C points out, I'm concerned the the rings do not look like they should. Grumble grumble.

Hmmm!

One of the intake guides is steel.

I would recommend you to take a closer look at the bottom end. Overheating easily makes the little end bushing, in the rod, turn and block the oil inlet hole. You may also have fried the liner o-rings, increasing the future risk of getting water in the engine oil.

Sometimes I pressurize the combustion chamber with air through an adapter mounted in the spark plug hole. 1-2 bars is generally enough to reveal problems with untight valves or excessive blow-by.

Cheers Doc, gonna split the motor, don't like the look of the bore!:(

Can you tell what are the benefits of larger valves? More top end? I'm thinking of going 1mm oversize inlet and exhaust. I've found a UK supplier for Kibblewhite valves.
Does anyone know if 1mm oversize will clear the piston with the 08 cam?
Can anyone recommend a UK tuner who could cut the valves in and flow the head?

Many thanks;)
