Hi all new on here ..considering buying a 2007 model FE ? 450 and wondered if there are any issues I should be wary of or things to check and any general remarks about this model year of bike etc would be appreciated..

Thanks for any advice

I bought an 07 FE450 and love it, great single track dual sport bike. There's a few things to look for, do a search on this site, there's a few threads about it.

92 mm sleeve and piston. Less power ...power isn't your best friend in the woods, it wears you out.

My regular woods bike is a 2012 KTM 350 XCf. I used to ride a 450 but for tight woods and 3 + hour hare scrambles the 350 is easier to ride longer.

a good reliable bike.

easy to maintain yorself.

only things ever known to happen are
occasionally a valve spring will break

mods
1) DVSK
2) stronger decomp spring and also starter repair kit so it starts on the button.

they run really well, although I found the ride somewhat jerky from such a strong engine. I've done a jetting kit that softened it off.

all parts bar I think decals are still available.

Thanks for replies

Yeah there's an issue with the starter on the bike I'm looking at it won't engage properly ... Where would I get a repair kit from please ?

Fe 450 2007 im looking at buying will not fire although there is a spark I have been informed that th bike was stored outside over winter . Tried fresh fuel I'm wondering if carb Jets could be blocked ...? Or maybe the ignition mapping Or Ecu ?

I would guess dirty carb first. On bikes I've bought that would not start that have been sitting for a while, I've taken out the plug and sprayed starting fluid in there and see if it will fire over.

runs like a non-runner should be priced like a non-runner :)

can be simple can be complex ...

surely fixable though!

seller's responsibility for sure, either to fix or to drop the price

Thanks could be blocked jets ... My old XR400 stored for 6months started 2nd kick after fresh fuel ... I'm wondering if it's a problem with the mapped system what i mean is it computer controlled ? it doesn't seem to be drawing through fuel ..like not flooding even ...

Sat outside in the rain maybe ...? Just exploring possible reasons ..i don't know the bike but see there are wires to the carb ....sensor or something ?

The big question, do you do your own mechanical work on bikes?

Wires are probably the TPS. So did you buy it? If it sat outside either water in the gas and/or carb is gunked up. If it were mine, I'd pull the carb and check the pilot and main jets , if dirty just replace both, here they are only $5 each. ;)
For the electrical it's most likely either going to work or not, but shouldn't change timing...

Thanks Oregon yes I do the routine stuff on my bikes ..stripping carbs changing jets that sort of thing ..less on electrical stuff ..I made sure tank was clean and put in fresh petrol also checked for spark ... Towed the bike and tried to bump start it the lights worked but engine refused to fire . I haven't bought the bike yet

Really sounds like a carb issue....Are you able to talk him down to a price you feel comfortable with? You do have Taffy over there if you need anything.

Will negotiate price thanks Oregon ..really like the bike ..present owner bought it from a dealer and only rode it a couple of times ...

me. don't worry about a 380 kit. just reduce the compression with a new flat piston. the jetting kit I do makes the 450 easier to ride.

I had a customer 4 years ago say he was selling up, he explained what he was getting (jerky, nasty, unrideable) a poor ride and it was too much (even though he said he weighed 20 stones...!), he trusted me about the jetting kit and he's still got the bike 4 years later.

If it's ok to ask these questions :). I 'm just wondering what would be a fair offer for a non runner .... ? I wouldn't want to insult the guy ..what would one in average running condition be worth ...?
