Breather Mod " Venting The 05's"

Finally did a breather mod to my 05 Fe450.
To connect the two vent outlets a 3/4" heater hose adapter was sourced from NAPA Auto Parts, P.N. 9935.
To plumb from the valve cover spigots to the T adapter I had some old water cooling hose from a 1983 YZ250 which I cut up in order to have a molded radius. Regular 3/4" (19mm) heater hose could be used however kinking might be an issue as the radius is tight.

A small length of 3/4" heater hose connects the T adapter to the high speed one way check valve, Chrysler P.N. 04300376.

A standard pipe fitting screws into the check valve and reduces the O.D. to 5/8". 5/8" heater hose is used for the remainder to end right above the countershaft sprocket behind the frame guard area.

This is a much much cleaner way of doing the mod as contrast to running the check valve directly above the valve cover spigot and looping the hose over the frame backbone.

The frame bung was closed with a NAPA Auto Parts 5/8" heater hose bypass cap, P.N. 660-1696.

The tank, shrouds etc. all bolt up with no interference or obstruction. I'll take a pic of the completed mod in a few days as I am done for today :)

Thanks to Dale Lineaweaver for providing most of the info to do this mod :)

i was looking through my parts manual for my o5 fe450 and noticed that there is an filter inline, page 62 , figure 10, shouldnt the filter stop flow of oil into carby?
you said that it is a 1 way valve, does it open to allow the oil to flow out onto ground in the event of bike upside down?

looks good, wouldnt mind doing that myself

I have to say that on my 02 470, i filled that airbox with oil many times 8O But it always kick started easily although it smogged the entire mountain for a bit afterwards...

I also dumped my 04 550 so many times the other day that I should have had to add a liter of oil by mid-day... but the new split breather hose seemed to do it's job. at least I think that is why they made that change, to reduce the possibility of a no start after dumping it...

I guess on the day I have a problem I will really wish I had done the mod.....

very clean looking mod Husabutt... good job...

The stock breather filter helps but doesn't stop the oil entering the intake.

The one way valve will keep the oil in the bike and not allow it to flow out onto the ground.

Bobzilla put the valve right where the filter goes. It won't stop the oil mist but should stop the cylinder from filing with oil in the event the bike becomes upside down and help create some vacumn in the engine assembly.

Thank you sir. I am also pretty sure the check valve will stop any water from being sucked up the vent tube. Not much of a issue in the Socal desert but surely a concern in your neck of the woods.

Doesn't the one-way valve flow to atmosphere & prevent back flow to engine, (that's how it induces some vacuum, right)? Maybe the design of the valve still would hold the oil back in case of a spill?

I have a one-way valve on mine, it's a Krankvent made by ET Performance. It's small enough I plumbed it right into the hose going to backbone.

I believe that to be the case. Previously Dale stated it would. I have a few more valves and could pour some oil in to test if requested.

The automotive style valve will indeed prevent oil from escaping the engine during an upside down encounter.

Dale

That has to be correct as I've had mine down "several" times & have yet to notice any problems from oil flooding.

Gents,

I just got around to doing the clean up and maintence to my bike after the Phx ride two weeks ago and while disassembling and cleaning up the oil covered engine I found that my OEM breather hose was cracked and leaking at the base where it secures to the valve cover. After a little self debating I opted to do the breather mod so many others have done before. I searched the forums for the necessary info and headed off to the auto parts store. After visiting two others (Auto Zone & Checker/Kragen) I found myself at NAPA and the sales associate was able to get me all the parts I needed, all in stock, in less than 10 mins. I used the KEM part number that Dale L had posted up for cross reference and NAPA had the part (pt# 2-29000) on the shelf for $21.99. I picked up three hose clamps and a piece of hose while I was there also. I then ventured over to Lowe's Home Improvement and was able to find the 5/8" x 1/2" brass fitting also for $2.04. While at Lowe's I picked up another piece of pipe, nylon reinforced clear hose, that I thought might give me the option of seeing the oil as it escapes for ***** and grins. Im not sure on how I will route the piping because I am very meticulous on the look and don't like the zip ties everywhere. I was thinking of making a catch can somewhere discrete that I can check and empty when needed but not sure on how to do it yet. I wanted to post the part numbers so others could have them incase they opted for the mod as well. I will update when everything is completed.

Here are some pics of the parts I picked up for anyone interested.

Regards,

I was checking my valve adjustment yesterday & while there decided to redo my breather setup. I liked what Husabutt did to his so took the hose off the backbone & routed it down the side like he did, already had a one-way valve, (Krankvent), in there.

Gotta ask, cause I don't know-

I have an 04. I assume that both sides of the valve cover should have a hose attached and then y'd or "teed" together before said valve. Part two, what size is the nip on the frame to cap it off?

Thank ya much,

Rich.

Okay, okay, please don't read my last post...it was definitely a case of not paying attention. Funny, if you just scroll up the page, all answers will be found...

Thanks again,

There are two fittings on top, one toward the front, other one toward the back, both on the left side. Yes, I did like Husabutt & teed them together. The fitting on the frame is same size, 5/8" hose fits it. I just used a cap on it.

Yep..my new 2004, when I checked, had or has "factory vent dry rot" so it's gots to go! Thats a "this weekend" project. Fun fun fun.

That's ok, I'd already put my 2 cents in, saw your post right after.

There is an alternative to the automotive or other one way check valve. Buy an XR 400 airbox drain hose. It's about 11 bucks and has a one-way check valve at the bottom. You can simpy connect the hose to the "T" and you're done. I used this on my KTM and it works perfectly.

Well, went on a ride after doing the hose to the chain deal. What a mess it made, oils the chain good, but also side of the bike. I took it off, sure makes a mess in the dirt!
