Bike Died No Kick Start Only Bump Start[Broken Valve Spring]

First off bike specs: '04 FS650e USA edition

Okay well I have been searching but before I started digging in where everyone else was suggested there was one thing the others didn't have that I had, the bike was running fine then died.

I JUST bought the bike, test rides were all fine, bike started first kick everytime. Got home unloaded kick started up just fine. Road to gas station, filled up with 91 octane (highest we have here) and started up first kick.

Riding around town, then as I ride up to a red light the bike just dies, no sputtering just dies. Won't kick start. Try for a bit then push it to a parking lot with some hills. Keep trying to kick start won't work so I start running with it and I am able to bump start it but if I get close to idle RPM it dies. So I bump start again and the bike runs has power but I just can't let off the throttle.

Would this condition lead to anything specific, or would I best be doing as the others have done, valve check, change oil, inspect spark plug?

Thanks for anymore tips or ideas.

RE: Bike Died, No Kick Start Only Bump Start

welcome to UHE TCK!

several things to try:

start/run it with the fuel cap loose
check the carb breathers haven't melted on the exhaust
blow out the pilot jet and the rest of the carb. look for a blockage there though!
maybe it needs a new plug

Sounds to me as though something was sucked into the Pilot as The Taff master stated. Welcome to the dark-side. where are you located...

RE: Bike Died, No Kick Start Only Bump Start

Sorry for the lack of location info... I'll update my profile in a second... I'm located in Oakland just across the bridge from SuperTireGuy (where I buy my tires for my other bikes)

Hell, I lived next to lake Merit for a while in the "90s. Scary place. Then to Walnut Creek, West pittsburg (Now BayPoint) Then back to the NW.

Ahh cool.. you're an ex local.. I actually live in San Leandro to be more specific... I also work in Oakley just east of Gun*Bay*Point...

So something getting sucked in there is that a common problem or would it underline more serious misuse of the bike.. as I said I bought this bike on Monday and it hasn't ran since that night...

A common occurance with the berg is when washing water gets in the air box. Often it is only a small ammount and you get a few coughs and sputters and then its all good. Sometimes if a person is not paying attention or just a dum *** enough water will get in to go into the float bowl and if the bike is not run for a while it will turn the fuel into a gooey mess and clog the jets. Lets not ask exactly how this dum *** knows but say that I learned back in 2001 that this could be a problem.

as others said take the carb of and give it a good cleaning. If you see a bit of crud at the bottom of the bowl and it is whiteish you found your problem. If it wasnt water it could have been oil from the breather but I kind of doubt that is the case. after cleaning the carb dump the tank and check the filters on the petcock just to be sure.

A great cure for the water in the airbox problem is the very trick airbox cover that Bendberg made. Well worth the money for this dum sh&t

Welcome to the dark side and you are in the right place to find out everything you need to know about Bergs and more.

I agree about the intake cover made by Bill. Works well, can't belive more guys don't have one.

Okay guys we've been working on it all day... carb has been cleaned there were no blockages, replaced the sparkplug... still will bump start but no kick... We are getting spark at the plug when kicking too.

However that bowl drain is dumping fuel out after a few kicks.... The spark plug new one and old shows that it's really rich...

So is it pretty much left at the valves now?

What do you mean bowl drain is dumping fuel?
While Kicking you say you are getting spark but no fire. Is the plug WET? if the bowl is draining is the float stuck and besides draining out the overflow are you flooding the motor?
What color is your spark?
sorry I am not trying to treat you like a DS but I got to ask the basics

I have heard of the ignitions being sort of wishy washy intermitant.
If ya got good spark, moist plug (not dripping) then you gott go after the valves
Most common is for them to tighten up .

Help the guy here boys is the 04 got the SEM? Im not familar and cant remember. That is a stator that can give you fits working sometimes , just barely and others not at all.

keep plugging away and well keep sending you down different paths until you fix it or sell it

yeah sorry I was dead in the middle of taking it apart when I wrote that so it was kind of lack luster when it came to details :) .. yeah the plug was wet with fuel... I didn't get to see the spark though cause I was "kicking" and my friend was watching the spark... We took the whole carb apart and the float was working fine and was adjusted according to the manual. But yeah it was flooding the bike after kicking so much without starting even though we had spark...

But just as you suggested it seems to be the valves, there was a broken valve spring, the front right spring...

So time to order some parts.. While I'm in the motor are there any good parts that would be good to upgrade?

am i right in guessing that this is a lingering '03 model? that you have the SEM gnition and the dell orto carb fitted?

the dell orto i well known for sticking open and flooding the engine. once it has done that you'll never get it started. when it did that to me i just tapped the bowl with a ratchet and it stopped.

Filters on the petcocks eh? Dernit are there any other golden nuggets I should know about? (I already found the built in one on the carborator)

If you take out the petcock from the fuel tank you will see a screen tube . Thats what you need to clean

Are ya gettin good spark??????????
did ya change the fuse????????

DDDOOOHHHH just remembered you found a broken spring.

Okay here's a picture of the broken Exhaust Spring.

Okay Here are some updated pictures. I finally got my Cam Chain Breaking tool and it broke but I still got it apart...

So everything looks to be alright, little sooty from the open exhaust valve. But the valve didn't kiss the piston so that's good.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW there 'lil fella!!!!!!!!

you have spoken tOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo soon!

your right hand inlet has been badly hitting your piston, your left hand inlet has been doing i9t as well!

aaaannnnndddddd i think your exhaust valves may have been as well. get us another few photos of the valve pockets in your piston please. at least 3.

put your plug back in the head and tighten, lay the head horizontal and fill the combustioon chamber with paraffin (kerosene to you!) and then using a torch look in all four ports for the paraffin gradually wetting the port. whichever port is wet has a bent valve.

you must now change both inlet springs 100% certain, you may ahve to change the exhaust valves but i would trust the springs PERSONALLY. others will tell you that they may break next. you need a new camchain and you must pay particular attention to how much camchain tensioner you have left? was it all used up? because IMHO your cam timing has been fluttering.
