Tommy Black had surgery to repair his broken leg. He should be home in a few days. The bike DNF'ed due to timing out at check 4 due to reasons unknown at this time. It may be a few days before I have all the details.
On a positive note Husaberg Mexico entered a bike and it did appear to finnish. What class or position I do not know.

I spoke with Tommy and the guys from 10x Wednesday in Ensenada just before tech inspection. The 'berg had some serious pieces of metal come out during an oil change that morning. Couldn't tell for sure, but it was either bearing race or part of a shift fork is my guess. The guys looked pretty heart broke but were going to give it a run either way.

On a positive note, of all the bikes that came through mile 215, where we were pitting for the BMW team, all were Hondas with the exception of 1 Yamaha, 1 KTM (factory effort) and 2 'bergs (10x never made it this far).

Baja 1000

Hi, berger...
Good to hear Tommy is being taken care of, and sorry to hear about "our" 'berg not making it through the race. Timing out, eh? Any feel if it was ignition slip or mechanical?
FWIW, the last time I was in Ensenada and points south was '62 or '63 on a surf trip with a bunch of friends. we had a couple of old Dodge ex-war-surplus power wagons for "surf wagons", would go anywhere!!Slept on the beaches, caught fish for food.... probably a lot easier than y'all had it over the last few days!!

timing out

Berger,Do we know if the engine failed or? Does timing out mean that they were past the allotted time to reach the check point as in an enduro?...nsman

Yes, the alotted time ran out. Neither Tim or I has seen the bike to determine cause of failure yet.

tear down

Will the results of the engine teardown be posted?.....nsman

Hi Berger,
Thank you for the update. I do hope to retrieve the engine for post mortem inspection as I am most interested to learn what failed and why. The good news is a lone Husaberg entry did indeed complete the course proving the equipment to be Baja worthy.

success

Hello Bergdaddy,I am glad to hear everyone is in one piece.Do not feel that you let yourself or anyone else down.Success is defined not so much by the finish line as the effort put into the endevour. As long as you know that you gave it your best shot it was a success....cheers ..nsman

Hi Bergdaddy,
Good to hear from you. If you will clean and ship the engine (as is) I will volunteer my time to disassemble and ***** the damage. I likely will be able to construct a map and timeline regarding said engines failure.

I understand some debris discovered during an oil change was saved. Please forward said debris along with the engine.

Give me a call as soon as you can.

Sincerely,
Dale

Baja 1000 from Baja Pits USA & Weatherman info

Weatherman is Bob Steinberger from PCI Radios. They have a web site. Sorry to hear about your crash and then loss of power farther down course. Baja can be both fun and wicked. We pitted the other Husaberg and it was running great at our Baja Pits USA Pit # 4 at RM 217. Glad they finished this race. Shows what Husaberg can do. They were running a conventional fuel cap tank. Hope to see them and others racing with a dry break setup in future. Adds at least 60 seconds to pit time (x's 17 pits = 17 minutes faster race times) Hope to see more Husabergs racing Baja with us next year. Tell Tommy hello from Stephen ([email protected]). Stephen

Bergdaddy

Very sorry to hear of the crash, injury and the engine failure. Vent your frustrations to your effort for next year. We'll all be here cheering you on.

I feel your pain and hope you can rest and hope your redemption is sweet.
