Auto decomp - slack fit !!

G-day
I've just removed my rocker cover for the first time (didn't I do well !! ) and noticed the auto decomp appears to be a very slack fit.
I'm doing this to resolve poor starting off the button (as in earlier posts).
There is wear on the leading edge but a lot of movement, the whole thing seems very slack. Is this normal ?
PS. I notice there is no gasket for when I replace the cover, am I ok to use 'instant gasket' glue ?

ROCKER ARM COVER GASKET

There is not a gasket between the head and the rocker arm cover. Watch your end play of the rocker arm shafts before completing repairs.

Go easy on the gasket sealer. Too much can change tolerences as well as make a mess.

The auto decomp should "flop" open and closed. There should be no or not alot of radial play though.

Loctite RTV gasket sealant is great it takes about a day to dry though but dries to a very tough hard rubber. Softer gasket sealants may cause u problems.

Thanks Guy's
Lloyd, there is a noticeable amount of radial play - could this be causing the lack of lift and if so which part should i be replacing.
Will the wear be on the autodecomp itself at the point where is fits through the top cam sprocket, or the sprocket and collar itself - could that have elongated ?
I've put everything back together now and still have the same problem.
:?

thanks

Whatever you do, don't use anaerobic type gasket sealants such as Loctite 515 Master Gasket (not RTV) on the rocker cover. No matter how you tighten the bolts it never allows the mating surfaces to pull completely together. They can end up propped apart by up to 0.010". The result will be the cam bearings won't be clamped in place properly. Also, using these sealants on large flanges that only have a few bolts across them will tend to buckle the flanges.

I always use Permatex Aviaton Sealant No. 4 on joints that must mate accurately like rocker covers. It has the consistency of thin bitumen. I would prefer it to RTV.
