I hear there's some great off road riding in Mexico and Baja. Nothing written in stone yet but anyone heading or want to go there February/March 2009? Anyone have any recommendations? Old Spanish silver mines and villages would be top on my list as well as lots of beer and beaches. I am looking to get a van and drive down there with my bike in the back, unload it and enjoy.

Cheeseberger lives up in WA. and may be due for a baja trip around then. I think he just returned from one today.

Well I don't plan on spening any time in the border towns or larger cities. Kind of like to find a place where the only danger may be scorpions in your tent...if thats at all possible.

I have done 2 separate trips to Baja in the last 40 days. Most of the violence is near the border. The Hall family incident is quite rare, and they broke the cardinal rule, dont drive at night, especially that close to the border with a high profile rig. If you are not a drug dealer, and not partying in TJ, there is not too much risk. I find most of the people to be a joy down there. Don't let a few bad stories prevent your trip. Bear in mind that I travel to places like Colombia and El Salvador, and like to eat my lunch in burning buildings. Baja is truly a magical place and should not be missed. I may be down there, who knows.

I haven't experienced the "trouble" in Baja, I am currently in week 3 of a trip here (now in Mulege) after riding out of San Jose del Cabo for a week or so and moving north to BOLA in a few days to stage out of there. Follow the rules as Cheeseberger mentioned, do not travel at night, don't be a target (public drunkeness), be low impact and enjoy the area.
And remember there are sometimes stories behind the story... You really should see what this region offers the off-roader, be sure to let us know how it pans out...
