Another Gremlin?

My 470 had the same estart issue. The starter sprag was worn out. Replaced the sprag and no more engagement propblems. The type of oil you run can also have adverse effects on the sprag. If you run synthetic you might try semisynthetic or Delo400 just as an experiment.
As far as the coolant goes I'm guessing it came from the overflow hose and blew back onto the cylinder and battery.

For your rad lead you'll need to look around? Maybe you have a loose hose or something simple. For your starter, I think we've been over this before? Learn the drill. and start the beast with your leg the first time! You'll thank me. I went out Sunday and rode north of Grand Rapids, she started third kick.

Your coolant leak is either caused by a loose hose or blowing out the over flow at the cap.I have had the same thing happen.Look where the over flow hose plugs in at the rad. cap on my bike the tip is loose and it flexes a little.I fixed mine with J B Wield and then slid the over flow hose all the way against the rad. to hold it in place-no problems sense.Starting wise I don`t know what to tell you what you haven`t already heard.Could check your carb to see if it needs cleaning-just a guess, had a problem similar.See if I have this right--your kickstarter slips or is it the e-start?Good luck.

Hi t-jet-tim.

don´t be too strict with the bike because of the old story.
Maybe you´re expexting new failures too early.
Just check your overflow outlet.
Have you lost some water? It could also be that your cap is
not ok. So water comes out of the hose too.
Don´t worry, it´s nothing serious.

best regards

Tjet: Cedar Creek is a Nice, really fast, dual 12 mile each loop system. It's maintained by the DNR. You'd like it! Take I96 west of Grand Rapids to B31 "Nucia" go North 25 miles to Ryerson Rd, Go left 3miles, trail head is on the left. I'm not sure if this will help you with your starting. My 470 is kind of tough on spark plugs. When my 470 starts to be, harder to start I'll throw in a fresh plug. They look great color wise. My dealer say's the high compression 470 cracks the porcelain on the cheap, NGK plugs. All I know is it helps.
PS: Ignore me, when I’m ragging on you about your 470’s quirks. I really mean no harm. I just really love my Bike!

I thought I rode a trail similar in name to that.
I took 37 north near white cloud,went about 5
miles west on 20 to the trail if was on the north
side of the road. All single track but I thought it
was quite long.Might be a different ccs trail.

t-jet-tim,

If you would like to confirm whether or not it's the overflow pipe, get a small plastic bottle (250ml or so) and pierce a hole in the lid. Then slip the overflow pipe into the top and cable tie the bottle to the lower collant pipe from the radiator.

Now you have a small catch tank and if the bottle is clear, you will be able to see if any coolant has leaked and how much.

If not this then I'm afraid it may be your head gasket on that side. Some of the 01/20 head gaskets did blow coolant out the side when being run very hard. The newer head gaskets also incorporate a silicon type sealant to prevent this from happening. Hope this isn't the case.

Cheers,
Simon

Thankyou I will check the overflow
outlet. The wierd part is it won't leak
while you are watching it.The head
is dry, only below the head gasket is
it wet.It is the e-start clutch that is
starting to slip or freewheel.Once the
bike warmed up,it was fine.
Did you check to see if the overflow outlet is loose?{it was on mine bike}The thing would not leak when I watched it either.Could try retorqueing the head bolts if the overflow is not it.I hope that that is all it is.The e-start clutch I hate to say is proably starting to go bad.My old engine had e-start and it did the same thing before it gave up the ghost.Best of luck.

It drains water/moisture out of the spark plug well. That is if it is the hole I'm thinking of.
I still think there is a good chance it came from the overflow hose and blew upwards and back.

regarding the coolant on the right side of the cylinder, mine does the same. check my gallery - i have a photo. the amount leaking is tiny, but looks horrible. usually worse when pushing bike hard/not much when cruising.

also regarding the starter clutch.....i find that mine also slips when cold. it is worsened by cold weather. now we are coming back to summer here and problem is disappearing. often i give a few kicks and then hit the button.

remember to make sure clutch re-engages before you hit the button again ie wait for whirring noise to stop completely. if you kick the bike a bit, may take it away from TDC to an easier part of the stroke whereby starter will start turning engine over easier.

Have Fun

sorry seems that pic i had is gone from my gallery. i must have got rid of it.

will find it again.

woops.

Where does your coolant leak come from?
It's getting colder here so I guess I can
look forward to more starting problems.
I have never rode this bike below 50F.
The leak I had was right where the overflow hose plugged on to the nipple on the radiator right below the cap.Do you have to add any coolant?Make sure the cap is on good.My bike still sometimes blows coolant out the overflow when ridding hard and I have found the overflow blown all the way to the head on the bike. That is with the overflow hose routed all the way down in front of the engine.Keep a eye on the level and add when needed.Sort of reminds me of a old ford pickup truck,if there is to much coolant in the radiator the thing will blow it out but if the level is right then there is no problems.Good luck.

Hi Bill,

I had a loose over flow tube in the neck of my radiator, I fixed it with metal filled epoxy, the high temperature stuff that you can repair holes in cases with.

Joe

my coolant leak comes from head gasket.

since amount leaking is very small, and oil is not getting contaminated, i have not been worrying about it.

pic coming tonight hopefully.............

Thanks JoeUSA.I have had this problem since I first got my bike. The outlet for the over flow on my bike is a plastic part that is pushed in from the inside with the cap off.I think the PO had problems or something and fixed it that way.I tried to fix it one time like what you decribed but with little sucess.I make sure the outlet is pushed out from the inside and the overflow hose is on as far as I can get it.It still works loose from time to time and the way I can tell is it makes getting the radiator cap off a pain.I have something like what you said laying around here somewhere might as well try to fix it right so I don`t have to fool with it.Thanks and take care.
