amber alert on '08s

one a fortnight ago, two last week, one this week.

'08s are cracking and breaking the valve spring caps. the cap rides up over the valve. sometimes there is a change in the engine note as well. i've also had 2 x '08s with the valve springs break this year so i thought it was only fair that these should get at least an amber alert on them.

i've had the exhaust valves in oine head stretch and get thinner, seriously! just like chewing gum they get longer and thinner! not good!

the answer is DVSK but the factory dealers aren't allowed to recommend non husaberg merchandise so... go figure!

never mind lads! still a better bike than a BMW hey!!!

RE: amber alert on

Cheers Taffy, looks like my valve cover is comming off for a looksee....
How many hours were on the bikes you've seen?

I'd like to know too Taffy, nothing like prior knowledge to save you thousands !!! My 08 FS650 has only got 15 hrs on it now for 5 oil changes but most have been wringing the ***$ off it. :roll:

i can only speak for the two in my hands and one has done a 1000km the other i didn't check.

don't forget that we are not on about catastrophic failure with any of these. what it does mean is that you can probably get some warranty cover if it's a known fault. bully them.

hmmm certainly nothing I have seen, we have clocked up 20,000 km rallye racing with 4 different '08 650's over the 2008 & 2009 Australian Safari's and no sign of this issue at all, never touched the valve clearances during the events even once !

550s for sure coz both the ones i did were. i'll ask around for the others. ewan had a 650 i think?

650 here (although 04), had 4 separate valve springs break on me over 2 years!

Here's one;

& I've had so many associated engine rebuilds I've copied an idea from a film & built a shrine in the garage.....

I've had Taffy's DVSK fitted & so far so good!!

anyone evaluated why? anyone else keep a sin bin of old knackered bits? as i say, all i have is waisted valves stretching, the collets then have a lot more room and chip at the valve stems and they must be producing massive pressure inside the cap trying to break it in half? i would also think that the shock waves through the cap are too much? if the valves are seating at all off centre and "weeble wobbling" then it will stress the caps heavily.

you know, in all this, i get the feeling it isn't the caps fault. could be wrong and they are fatigue 'fault lines' but...
