airbox solution?

well i have just taken stock of a lineweaver needle that i asked dale to machine to a spec i wanted to try and after a test i am having my engineer modify it some more. the bike likes a lower MJ and i have now fitted a #145. the next test is to borrow scoots 41mm carb and do a back-to-back.

however... i want to know if anyone on the site has ever made an airbox for the husey?

Q
was the original air filter used and thus it was an anti chamber?
or
was it a whole new airbox with a bigger CSA for an air filter?
and
did the frame brace stay in in the vertical 'A' frame?
and
what material should i try? aluminium i trust or nowt?
and
has anyone assessed another manufacturers airbox for suitability?

Why don't you use a Lipton tea box, hey Rosbif?

I've not been here in a while, and I am glad you're still rocking and experimenting.

hey le frog-there's no room for part timers here you know! yer either in or yer out!

things are picking up again after a very quiet august and september.

stick a few phuqs into the septics froggy coz they are all half asleep!

Just remotely connected to your questions, but still...

When on the dyno, getting about 65-66 bhp on the rear wheel, I threw away the rubber connecting the carb to the frame. That added 4,5 bhp on top revs instantly! I believe it to mostly come from the much shorter intake length and some from the less restricted breathing. That is still the most cost effective tuning I've ever done! :D

dale uses a trumpet for improved flow at low and mediuum speeds so imagine putting those two together!

dale has previously described the rubber 'sock' as a culprit in the BHP game.

the answer must be to have the biggest airbox of still air and the largest surface area air filter in it you can fit!

i would think that having the air go straight throiugh the top of the frame WITHOUT an air filter and into an airbox WITH one would be a good way forward-certainly for the 400.

however manufacturers have larger airbox tops than the frame opening before they start and THEN STILL remove the lid completely claiming more power! (for an increase in induction noise BTW!).

the bigger the airbox the better!

thanks for showing interest Dr C and i like your new Nik a lot better as the other one made me feel i should be calling the NSPCC.

1. As the maximum airbox volume is practically very limited on a motorcycle, I agree. I have seen Supermono´s with a sealed rear seat, connected to the airbox through large pipes/hoses. Then we are talking volume!

2. Do not know the abbreviation "NSPCC", but I'm sure it´s bad if you felt like calling:) . From what I´ve seen on many other forums I thought me, as yet another cranky kid, would fit right in! I´ll keep the new Nik though...

I uploaded a picture of my Supermono airbox in my gallery, if you´re interested.

Nice work!

Looking at the exhaust system and what looks to be some pretty neat hydro forming, there is only one person you must have spoken to when you designed it - Mr. Schneider, right?

Cheers,
Simon

"Thank you - thank you very much!"
You are absolutely correct! Swiss has been helping me out with designs since 1998. I use compressed air instead of fluid. It´s easier to heat it up with a torch where you need it to expand. I know what you´re thinking, but... If the seam opens up it doesn´t go  , it just blows your cap off :)

Dr C

national society for the prevention of cruelty to children = NSPCC!!!!

thought you'd like that!

for all the things i would design and make in this life; a still airbox in CF would come very high on the list!

in the 90s the airbox size (in litres) became a the big talking point.

i admire anyone with the skills to have something like that made-congratulations! i'm very jealous.

let me know if you want to go further with it in conjunction with belmouth and dyno work.

I though it might be something in that direction :)

Thanks again!
It was very time consuming to let the plug fill out every "wrinkle". Also the plug had to be covered with a couple of thin glassfibre layers to make it strong enough for vacuum bagging it with the CF. And finally the plug had to have the same surface roughness as I wanted the final CF box to have = shining. The local company "Composite Design" used the plug for the final airbox moulding.
