2002 FE 501e coolant hose blasts off engine block

This has happened to me twice now. Both times I have been putt-putting and not riding hard. The coolant hose snaps right off of the engine block spraying hot coolant all over the place--this, after roughly 1 hour of slow (first and second gear) riding in fair (shirtsleeve) weather. The radiator cap is stock and has a pressure rating of 1.40 printed on the top. There is no blockage of the bleed tube coming right off the top of the radiator. I'm not a mechanic, so I'm hoping there's an easy fix, like a new cap??? Thanks in advance for any help.

Hey there 9mm,

A common problem for your year of bike. Check this thread from 2004 for a suggested fix :)

That thread is years old so I'm hoping you can answer. When they say they made a bigger barb with JB Weld, do they mean they built up a ridge around the pump intake like this:

Its a good idea to build up the flare on the end but is it really necessary? is the hose hard and not longer flexible? softer rubber is more sticky, squishy, and seals better than an old hose that is dried out from being heated up and cooled down a thousand times, is the clamp in good condition? I would replace the hose and the clamp before i jb welded a new lip on,(with exactly same style clamp not the cheap kind with slots cut for the screw to tighten they will cut the hose over time) what is the peice of jb wled that breaks off gonna do to the water pump or other passeges? what do i know though i just work on autos

Believe me, it's necessary. Had the same problem multiple times with my 02' 501 from when it was new. Added a JB Weld flare and never had a problem again. A wider, better hose clamp is also advisable.

Easy fix! Go for it 9mm.
