That funny little race track at the bottom of the
Whilst cruising the classifieds on 'trade me' looking for an older Berg project I stumbled across an add for a Yamaburg (or should that be Husaha). Turns out some yobo out west has popped a YZ490 motor into a 501(?) chassis.
As a whole it looks quite tidy. Will try an catch up with the owner this weekend for more info, but if there is a suitable member here with the required skillset then I am sure the pictures can be loaded. look under Husabergs for sale on NZ trademe.
I am looking for more of a basket case myself.

actually looks half decent

Looks good. I upgraded my IT490 to my 98 501 because I wanted suspension and brakes, not more horsepower.

Its interesting to see that the Gen 2 frame, ie 2000 + has been retrofitted with a 98 or earlier swingarm with linkage. Its the one aspect on my 650 that is not as good as the old girl, the way the linkage tail hooks up on the 98 is sublime. The PDS on the 650 is not bad by any means, with a couple of revalves to get it to where its at, and maybe the extra HP doesn't help.

If and when I trip over a later linkage rear end I thought I'd fit it just to find out. I figure it'd bolt in except for the link to frame mount which a little TIG work will no doubt address.

Hi Steve,
Model year 2000 actually still had the old style swingarm, rear suspension w/linkage mated up to the gen 2 frame. It was somewhat of an odd duck year.

Don't think so. The 99 and subsequent had PDS to the best of my knowledge. The 2000 retained the older Gen 1 motor. The 98 had the last of the linkages. The 98 also had the last of the stock DVSK. The 99s went conicals, and 2 stage ignitions OTTOMH.

But I could be wrong

Steve,
I stand corrected. You are right about the pds beginning in 99'! I'll climb back into my hole now.

but Steve....

the 2000+ frame is essentially the 2001-2008 frame? so what you're really saying is that a linkage rear end from '98 should still fit in an '08?!?!?!

how very interesting!

bike looks really well put together and couldn't help noticing in the background that access to the garage door is difficult with all those weeds....

OT.....
The front end from a 501 -96 fits a 00 frame too.
Took the tripleclamp and forks from my donator bike -96 and fitted on the -00 501, have no partlist for the -00 fork so i have little problems to order parts for it thats why i tried the -96 frontsusp.

Must be one of the most ultimate bikes, Yamaha engine and Husaberg frame, nice work!

Inspired to take one of mine RZ (RD) 350 engines and build a Husaberg RD350, just have to build me an real garage first so i dont burn the barn down were i have my bikes today ;-)

Jampe

In my long winded way, yes.

The top shock mount would need checking too for geometry, as well as attaching the link to the frame at the bottom. You can tell I haven't got too excited about it yet, even with all the bits in the shed, but I don't want to strip down my 98, it goes too well. It does appear to me that this is what has been done to the Yamaberg. The swingarm definitely looks like my 98. 97/98 are the same, maybe 95/96, but around then sometime they beefed it all up. I believe that the geometry stayed the same, but the linkage bearings were enlarged. 97/98, no worries.

In the meantime my DR650 ultimate tourer project progress. Got an Ohlins shock from a 96 linkage 360 KTM for it and arriving soon a set of 08 SXF WP CC forks and triple clamps. The CC forks may well end up on the 650 Berg, time will tell. The 26 mm axle bore gives me the opportunity to machine eccentric bushes for the Suzi front wheel with 17 mm axle to experiment with trail. 38 l in the Safari tank gives me 500-700 kms depending on terrain. Fun times.

PS
It appears that the Yamaberg has an Ohlins fitted. When were they last stock on Bergs, 96?

97's were fitted with Ohlins. This I know is fact.
Not sure about 98'.

My 98 has WP. I like Ohlins, even though the WP works OK, great even, the Ohlins is just better made.
