1998 FC600 valve cover explosion

Any ideas what might have caused this?
Do you think the cylinder is bent where whatever exploded the cover hit the outer cylinder wall? Looks a little bent to me...

the bike is seriously cheap in price, but a replacement cylinder and valve cover plus whatever broke off in the engine to get stuck between the cam and the cover like that would probably be pretty intense...

I'm gonna guess a tappet adjuster lock nut came off and wedged between the cam sprocket and chain.

The bike still runs, the chain is still tight to the cam gear, looks like something wedged on the outside

its the auto decompression weight that has brokent and gone flying, probably and hopefully out of the motor, but I would not run it until you take the top off. Plus a lot of oill would have come out? Take a look and let me know if that is what caused it.

Nasty .......looks like the head got damaged too.
The 2 above are good guesses. Could also be the decomp stop bolt/nut (if the early models had them).
Does it really matter?
Get it apart and have a look.

i'm not the owner, i found it on craigslist for cheap, was interested about the cracked valve cover, when i got the pictures i knew there was really no chance of me buying it... i'd easily triple the price of the bike just putting a new motor together... I could buy it in hopes of another parts bike popping up, but all the ones i have seen have had bad things happen to the top end of the engine, making them worth zero...

i bought a FE650 2002 like that in the spring. really cheap repair. try £50!

the cam chain had been lifted up by a locknut just as the first respond -one ken waun - has said. the engine was revving quite high at the time. the cover needs a strip welding in a sterile-ly clean and filed cover whilst it's bolted to the head on his bench.

that's it. of course, you can spend more money making a good bike of it but that is ALL it will be.

does that mean when a scotsmun asks "do you know one ken waun" they say" ya ken one ken waun"!!!

ken = know or understand

you really think whatever broke off didn't do much damage to the case down low?
Why not just get a new valve cover? would a 95 valve cover fit?

I think the AH screw broke off the camshaft gear and did a lap or two. Is it knocking when it runs ?

Mine did the same as that, the auto decompressor broke and did a lap.... the early motors didnt have the stop bolt in the cam sprocket, when I sent pictures of mine to Husaberg the response was that the decompressor would always break if this bolt wasnt there.... it didnt even have the hole in the cam sprocket for one. There are also at least 2 different sized water pumps so the covers arent all interchangeable
