Fitting uprated starter motor

Got a CBR600rr starter motor off a 2004 bike for £10 off ebay. Had to take around 0.25 inches off each of the posts on the mounting bracket and shorten the studs by the same amount. Even though the motor is a larger diameter than the stock item, it is the same length. Took less than an hour to do. It now turns the motor over many more times than the stock motor. Engine still won't start on the button though as I need to change the autodecomp cam.

Will post pics of the mod to the starter if anyone's interested and I've found out how to post them

I would like to exchange restarter at the FE501.
 
From what I see on eBay, the 2004 CBR 600 RR have a starter motor which cannot work with the Husaberg, even with the upgraded bracket.

Note that you can always strip a newer starter motor and replace the internals of yours with that of the newer motor.

I remember sending one longer motor to our friend DaleO for his 501, and he did just that operation instead of ordering the new bracket.

Below is another example from eBay. I do not know how this motor would work.

Note that you can search eBay by looking for starter motors for any mid-size displacement Japanese road bikes (500-950), but the CBR have the closest ones to what we're looking for.

You can also look for "Mitsuba", "SM-14", "Mitsuba SM-14", etc...

Buying a used starter motor from eBay is always much cheaper that buying a spanking new one (sorry, Dan).

Hi LeFrog!

What you sticked in subsequently, like that is for me. This is a CB 900 RR starter.
I tested, but in spite of the fact that it's strong, unfortunately little his rev. :idea:
Anyway this very big, and it was necessary to rasp it, that fit. This was wasted money. :?

The bracket does not interest me since I prepare one. Let the starter be good only! 8)

Oto, are those Hungarian sayings?

They might not all be too powerful, I bought three different ones from eBay one day, just to experiment. One I resold to DaleO, one on my bike and one for spare.

Now, of the three, two were fine, but one kicked like a mule right off the bat(tery), ripped off the cabling and kept turning around its axis for about 3 seconds.

That's the one I decided to use, but I ended up shotting my sprague gear. Now it needs to be replaced, and I will upgrade with the latest assembly.

It did start the 501 cold a few times. Or when it did not, all I had to do was prime then e-start.

With the new bob weight installed, new sprague, beefy motor and Yuasa, I have a feeling I am on the right track.

I really don't mind kick starting, now, but a good solid and trusty e-starter will be a nice thing to have on this bike.

OK, I will try to get the fore-said restarter, I report on the result next.
I hope that it will be good.
I'm interested in the fact that it's starter properly only anyway let it turn the engine.
FYI: I use Mobil1 15W-50 Racing 4T oil, which is very good, but coldly and warmly harder, than an 10W-50 oil, a stronger starter would be needed because of this. :idea:

Sorry had problems with digital camera. The pics above are representative of the motor I used. Just trim 0.25" from the posts on the motor mounting bracket which unbolts from the engine casing. The mounting bolts for the motor need to be slightly shortened to fit the length of the tapped holes in the bracket.
 
Well I wanted to get it running on the kick start. It's taken me ages due to work commitments and the steps and patio I've been building in the garden. Now the bike's running, I'll fit the auto decomp...don't know when but it'll be during November. I'll post a mail when I get it sorted.
 
looneyberg was there a problem with your auto decomp cam or is this something that has to be addressed when chainging the starter motor

The CBR600rr starter motor I fitted is a lot stronger than the original one as it turns the motor over quicker and for longer. However, I believe my autodecomp is warm so I'm replacing it. I would change the starter motor if you want but look at the autodecomp also. Hope that answers your question
 
CBR s/motor

I was the original poster to sus out the CBR600 starter motor!!!!! Mostly because the newer model was too expensive and the CBR has the same spline which was very difficult to find out as the makers of the Mitsuba wouldnt ackowledge my emails??
In the end I fitted it and the motor turned over alot faster but from memory I still had trouble starting it off the button so I fitted another battery and started it ONLY on 24 volts?? haha It was so cheap it didnt matter if it burnt out but it didnt and it worked great. However when I traded it for the 04/550 the dealer removed the second battery and fitted a larger pilot jet (yes I know it goes against the Tafffff) and the bike starts perfectly and still does to this day from what they tell me?

fwiw, i put an '06 honda f4i starter on my '02 650 using all the stock husa mounting hardware. only mod was that the starter is longer thus the boltholes are about10mm farther out. i just measured the difference and drilled 2 new ones on the angled gusset and spaced the bolts by diagonally cutting a 6mm id spacerand put a 1mm thick 6mm washer underneath to make up for the lack of a standoff which is part of the original mounting holes. works great! i mounted the solenoid on the unused outer boltholes.

If you use a 600rr starter motor all you have to do is remove 0.25" from each of the mounting posts on the starter motor bracket and file out the hole in the solenoid mounting plate to accomodate the bearing housing for the motor. In effect the new motor has the mounting lugs at a lower point on the end cap and the bearing flange protrudes more than the stock motor. Seems to have more power with the new motor, however, the autodecompressor has to do its stuff. I still need to replace the autodecomp on mine
