Sound familiar? HI! I'm new. I'm in trouble. Bike was running great all day... then somewhere about 2.5 miles from nowwhere.. and 15 in the air... all went silent. Hell of a push out. Thought I might share the picture.

Still waiting to hear what caused this.

Maybe Cam Chain broke and smashed top casing etc.

i've had it happen as well. i think it was 25 months ago. you may find a tappet nut missing or the chain snapped etc.

get yourself a used rocker cover, a new camwheel, and you'll need the uprated camchain, uprated tensioner blade, and to modify your existing tensioner.

there may be more. see if you can get every single piece of swarf out and then you may not need to rebuild.

oh and welcome to UHE! please go into 'the doc' which is on your left and look at the 'red alert' section.

regards

Taffy

my 650 did this :(
the bolt in the cam sprocket which is a stop for the decompressor sheared and got into chain and went up and out
the newer sprockets have a stop pressed in so i got one of those

be sure to check for bent valves.

Well, it appears the the voices of experience were indeed correct. The guide failed, disintigrated, then cahin then failed, bunched up and blew through the cover. Should all be fixed in about a week. Not inexpensive, but could have been much worse! Action photos to come shortly.

As Dez said, at least check compression leakage to make sure the piston hasn't kissed the valves.

A previous 2nd hand bike had slightly bent exhaust valves when I got it. They had carbon'd up and seemed to be sealing OK. It ran fine, but they must have leaked when they first got bent.

I did at least 3000km on it before pulling it down to fix a head gasket problem & finding them. I guess I was really lucky one did not fall apart while it was running.
