right just give my bike a bit of a check over after being in the shed over the cold couple of weeks and the forks are really stiff and if you put the front brake on and pull them up then try to compress them they almost lock , they were fine when i rode it in the snow 2 weeks ago . any ideas ?

It's a 2002 FE501. Turns out, it has 48mm forks on it instead of 43mm. The axle is the small size 20mm like a 2002 bike should have. What's going on here?

Is it a complicated (or even possible) process to disassemble the cast aluminium component that hold the axle on the front forks (sorry I don't know their technical name?) I note they have a black plastic insert on the underside which corresponds with the end of the fork. Thanks Crispin
