WP Extreme - help!!

I´m riding a 1998 FE 600 with WP Extreme 50mm fork.

The fork is very unsensitive, distinctively in low speed enduro riding in the woods and wet dirty underground.
We have changed our bikes, I testet a KTM 200 and 300 (with upsidedown fork 40 mm) 2-stroke, also a FC 470 2002.
All bikes are much better than mine!

Now what can I do with less money?

I dont want spend much money in these fork, some drivers said "forget the Extreme an buy a other fork"

Is it possible to get other shims or take them in a other setup by myself.

Thanks a lot!!

Now I have the shims from the left (comp) fork in front of me.
There are 5 round discs:
1x16mm
1x14mm
1x12mm
2x9 mm
and the 3 corner disc who closed the holes in the piston.

Is this original?
Whitch disc should I take away for better sensitivity?

Someone correct me if I am wrong but the closer the shim is to the piston the more it affects the initial damping. So you need to know the order they were in.
Could it be your insensitive fork might be caused by too little rebound damping? This way the fork comes out to fast making the bike nervous to ride also.

I have the same WP 50 Extreme on my 99 FE 501. Can someone help me with some basic adjustment settings for a 200 lbs rider. I ride a combination of very rocky trail riding and fast dessert riding. I just serviced the fork with new fluid and seals.

I would appreciate any help you can give me.

I've had some problems too. I had very hard frontsuspension and the seals always broke very fast (after 2 times riding). I rode with factory settings on my SM.
I gave them to a guy specialized in suspension and he did wonderful job.
According to his explanation he made some holes in something inside the frontsuspension to let oil better circulate...Forgive me my technical terms because I know nothing about it! But are that shims???? he changed???

He advised me also to use siliconspray or so everytime it ride in dirt or so...
Now when I use some force on the front when I hold the brakes...the bike moves smooth into the suspension...I was not used to gave a response earlier
When i push the centerpoint of the bike...front and rear are together pushed into the suspension
last weekend I did some offroad and I never had experienced a saloonlike feeling like this...
Now I have a comfortable ride on my husa...
It might by something like that to (I have 48 mm forks)

There was 2 "3-corner" discs installed - i replaced one.
The round discs i mounted in a other - softer- sequence.

At the stand it feels smoother,

Wish me good luck for me first ride out on saturday!

BTW:
Here in munich the beer-tents for the oktoberfest are under construction since 4 weeks!!!:prosit:

You should check out enduro experts in N.J. they are very familiar with *********** extremes. They are located in New Gretna, N.J. 08224,ph # 609-294-8703

I have posted similar questions on another forum click click
where the local guru (terry hay) suggested i fit a spacer in the rear shock.
:?
I dunno but i am sending my shock to him soon to get this mod done and the telescopic needle valve installed and according to terry this will go along way to fixing the harshness in the forks and gives a better platform to start modifying my forks.
All over my head but i trust him

cheers doug

It is my understanding that the 50mm WP forks were about the best "conventional" fork ever produced. Main problem here in the states is that they are hard to find parts for.

I know a guy who had them fitted to his 2002 KTM 250exc and loved them.

I recently had some experience with these forks and had my suspension tuner set them up. I realize that it's a long ways to send forks to get tuned but if you're interested I can handle the logistics on this end for you if you'd like.
