wont start when hot

Hey,
I Have a 2003 FS650 motard. It has a dellorto carb & starts fine when cold but after it has warmed up it it is difficult to start.
When it eventually starts it cuts out as soon as I touch the throttle.
any ideas?

we have at least 1 or 2 of these per week my friend. i suggest that you go into chapter 12 of the doc and look at the poor starting section. at the top is the hard starting guide. there is just soooo much there that it could be.

in general, the bike might be running too rich so struggles to restart. however that shouldn't stop you opening the throttle.

if i were to guess i would say either an old plug so get the IXU24 or that you are one of those suffering from the wrong ignition timing mark.

Under hot start DelOrto conditions I will generally pull in the manual decompression lever, open the throttle and kick the motor through 4 or 5 strokes. Release the decompressor and bring it up to TDC and give a good kick. If it does not start after 2 or 3 kicks, repeat the whole procedure.
You do have an underlying problem that should be addressed. Whether it be a bad plug, improper float level , worn needle and jet or even a marginal stator.

Does the kick with decomp trick emulate what the hotstart mod does? Talking about those who add a hose on the link between the carb and the engine and open it with some sort of valve when they need to hostart.

yes froggy in a way it does. if you take X as the mixture of fuel and air hanging around after the stall well after kicking through 4-5 times you have cooled the cylinder a little which as you know from choke when cold helps.

generally kicking doesn't suck much fuel up either - especially when the engine isn't being given a chance to start. so that makes the eventual mixture at the real kick a little leaner.

the point is you must do what your bike needs.

my bike started third kick on the dell orto cold and first kick warm but i did run the K35 during a lot of that time which was a leaner needle at idle.

what's your problem now mate?

Just had new plug, new fuel, new oil, new battery, valves adjusted. I have the hot start mod on my FE650 motard but never needed to use it. Starts 2nd kick when cold & first when hot.
The bike has been sitting around for about 5 months, I just bought it & am trying to get it going. It was a race bike with 35hrs on it.

you've lost me? is this a second bike you're now on about?
