Will it hold together?

Fellow Racers and Riders.
I've got a box stock 2001 FS650E and a seventeen year old who want's to go "SuperMoto" racing next summer. Question is will the motor hold up to the seventeen year old. With "No Fear" in his eyes and "Never give up" in his heart, will the bikes motor hold up to his enthuseism. I've heard rumors the 01' motor is inferior and will eventually give up mechanically unless improvements are made. We will be contesting in amateur events, none the less my rider will think it's for the world Championship. Are there preventive measures that can be made to ensure engine reliability for the season other than a throttle stop? I understand the importance of oil changes and valve adjustments, tweaking this and tweaking that, suspension upkeep and so on. The bike sounds real hot for a stock unit; almost like it's ready to explode.
I will asme the role of "Financier" for this 2006 "Lets go Racing" project but I'd like to maintain a budget also.
I would appreciate any serious and common sense input from any experienced riders and racers out there.
Thanks,
Mackberg

:D MACKBERG,better update rockers & balancer, then make sure
to gear bike tall enough to not over rev.my 01 fe 650 has been
awsome only real mod done was installing 41 fcr carb.

GOOD LUCK!!

Hmmmmm,
Two responses looks like $1500.00 to $2000.00 already. Any recalls on that stuff?

Whoeeee Berger,
What's wrong with piston and rod? Why do I have to go to a foreign country to get parts. What part of "budget" don't you understand?

Mackberg 8O ( going under very fast)

I just said it should not be that expensive unless you are going to do the piston and rod. JBS builds the 750cc Berg motors and he has basically new or very low hour parts for sale. They do not use the stock piston, crank, cylinder or balancer so he has quite a surplus of parts at a very reasonable prices. You may have seen some on ebay recently.
Just trying to give you a heads up and save you some $$.

Mackberg

that isn't $1,500?!?!

strip the engine, two main bearings, a balancer bearing, new rings, check the camwheel and do change the camchain to an old heavy duty chain. whilst you are there, a sidecover gasket, head gasket and off you go!

the follower bearings can be done as and when they start to go! it'll get tappety one day and then you know it's time. while the engine is stripped you should check whether the rockers were updated.

i wouldn't over gear the bike, all he'll do is hang on to every gear past the redline to get it to go. just make sure that on the fastest part-he still has revs in hand.

i'm afraid it's going to be expensive and that's only an estimate (bobzilla).

get used to doing your own work if you can.

tuning? complete pipe and 41mm FCR are the obvious ones. port the exhaust ports and put in 32mm exhausts would be next. i do all my own porting and on the exhaust side, especially, it needn't be too difficult.

As I have grown kids who ride, don't forget they've got to stop the phreakin' thing, too. I just tell mine, if you don't fear watching the race instead of riding in it, don't blow it up or prang it too hard.

Mackberg,

The only thing that you "have" to do is sort the balancer out. At the very least just get rid of it and put in a spacer. Next is the e-start sprag clutch - if that hasn't been update sort that too - cheapest option is just to pull the whole starter assembly out.

There you go, increased reliability only requiring a couple of gaskets and some manpower - ready to race.

Everything else can be done as and when.......oh apart from the brake pads, the stock Beringer pads are *****, get some better ones from Ferodo, EBC, Carbon Lorraine, Vesrah, SBS or whatever.

Have fun!
Simon

Thanks for all the input guys,
I'm going to talk to my local dealer and get some estamates to rebuild my "Factory Racer" (HA, HA). Maybe rebuild isn't the correct term to use, maybe "rcondition" and "beefup" are better terms. Anyway I thankyou for you contributions.
I'll let you all know how things go.

Upgrade your engine isnt any problem, we did 40pc of warrenty upgrades for Husaberg dealers in 2001, it was a weak engine.
Balancer: we reduced the weight and there was a bearing upgrade kit to double ballberings, you can not use 2003 balancer due to diffrent angle on the teeth of sprocket, in that case you have to change the balancer drive shaft also. In the begining we fabricated our own bearings in a bearing grinder. milled a 9m bearing down to 6mm and fitted 2pc with loctite glue. Just buy the bearings from 2003 and glue them.

main bearings: left side SKF 6206C3/TN9, right side SKF NJ206ECP/C3.
Can also use the same configuration as 2003, 2x SKF NJ206ECP/C3
Con rod: std 2001-check for cracks only on early models.

If you want to remove the balancer complete go for a NJ2206ECP/C3 and a 7,4mm spacer ring on the left side, cut the sprocket away from the balancer drive shaft, axial freeplay 0,6-0,8mm on the cranksaft.

We recomend 2003 rockerarm assembly, and the 0.8 camshaft.

Should not be that expensiv.

Hi Thomas:

Do you have the 01 counterbalancer, that will mesh with the 01 balancer shaft, upgrade kit part number?

The 01 parts manual only lists the single row along with the companion bearing.

Counterbalancer 400cc Part # 210185-01
470/501/550cc Part# 210186-01
650cc Part# 210187-01
Bearing (1) all Part# 360037-01

Thanks in advance,

Eric

Thanks Joe!!!

I didn't see that in a 01 parts manual or a 01-02 combined manual that I have. Is yours a 02 only manual?

If anyone has a kit part number I will take that also :)
