What can I do to make my shock happy (09)

well..it seems people are more involved in discussing "girls" bikes and other girl's stuff....rather than some performance gains.....OOOOh wait!!! I forgot the "go fast" stickers :(

someone give me a 570 for a month and i'll tell you what needs doing

in the meantime i'll keep fiddling with the TTX on me girls bike :D

Hi mud400
what does the shock do that make you unhappy ? personally i think fork is more questionable

I already revalved my forks, I am now much happier with them ala Cimwill's stacks.

The shock is now my problem. I like the way the shock rode with lighter springs. Now that I am running a 8.0 it seems like it overpowers the valving. I have the rebound close to all the way in and it is ok, but not great, plus it does not have any adjustability, it is just ok, or bad. The compression seams to be OK, but it also lacks adjustability.

I should add, I have quite a bit of experience with the WP OC forks, but nothing with the shocks (YET!). I just need to work through it to get me to a good starting point.

Mud, my shock is with FX specs. and currently 84Nm spring. My REb is usually between 20 and 23 clicks out....and this was the same with 80Nm spring..if I go lower on clicks it starts to pack, however you surprise me with running almost closed REB?? 8O

I have been thinking about changing mine to FX specs, but I would like to shuffle some shims before I buy the other things the FX spec needs.... I think I may just try the stacks first and then go from there.

Sorry, saying they are almost closed is an exaggeration, but right now I am 8 out. I would just like to get back the adjustability. It may also be a function of the fluid, I don't know what is in there right now, I need to change that.

I still have alot to learn about the shock, including how do describe what it is doing.....

HI mud400
I have been running the 7.1 9.0 prog spring and I am 14 clicks out and that spring is a bit stiffer in the the end
of stroke compared to a 8.0 spring, the 8.0 is a little stiffer initially
8 clicks out on your shock seems a bit exsessive keep in mind that that also effects low speed compression
since you reduse free bleed inside the shock I think that perhaps a shim is broken this could be either comp or reb stack
I mention fork because it tend to use up the travel rather quickly after different springs and oil levels I bought a
CC wp fork ( it was horrible stock ) and once revalved it worked great it stayed up in the stroke
I have since revalved the shock and and gone to to a 8.0 spring reason for the 8.0 spring is to get less race sag
102mm that makes the bike work better in the up hills and down hill

Viking, what is your weight? I am 220lbs geared and 84 spring does not come even closer to 105mm. with 35mm static?!?!

There comes a point where you just have to go with the race sag and forget the static. Once you get the spring stiffness up there the bike is just not heavy enough to make it sag that much unless you are using a non-linear spring. It helps to run as little pre-load as you can, but even then there is a point.

My 8.0 has 7mm preload and my static sag is at 35mm. Bump it up to a 8.4 and you get the idea.

I am also suspect of the oil. I went for a 50 mile ride the other day and after about an hour it felt like it didn't have any dampening, just kind of boinged along. It may be a bad bleed also.

When I have the time I will tear it apart and give it a good once through. I have some advice of some shims to shift around a little and I will inspect them to make sure what is in there is good.

I will report when done.

Thanks!

Hi
I weight 197 lbs naked so I preload the spring 10mm to get the 102mm static sag is around 33mm I wish that it would be less preload< I have a custom prog spring that I get less preload but it gets too gnarly half way through the stroke and rebound was 14 clicks
