Unfortunately, this is the only pic of my bike I got.

But I managed to get a few of NSMAN and BILLTECH.

Feel free to view the gallery here.

look, i know this sounds like a silly question but how do you know how thick the ice is . is it possible to fall through the ice ??

i have seen them fall through the ice in the movies

Not a silly question at all.
Somebody drills a hole in the ice to see how thick it is.

In theory anyway.

Having fallen through the ice as a boy playing hockey, I can tell you it can be a bad day! :D
The ice thickness was checked today and was was just over 25 cm,which is fine for bikes and people but not adequate for parking vehicles.

Quickest way to check ice thickness:
Bring a chainsaw and make plunge-cuts straight down. Easy to see when you draw water. Check several places. Especially where snow is thick (insulating) and where currents are suspected. If you bottom the saw dry you are way safe. 10cm is enough if the ice is clear. Double ice not uncommon and is not unsafe if bottom layer is solid. Watch for spring ice, where it can be very thick and yet porous and dangerous.
Fun isn´t it?

yes it looks like it would be awesome , but in the back of my mind would be the concern of a thin layer . but if you check all the areas that you cover then it would be safe .

i have never seen snow , one of the downsides of living in australia

Great pix.
I gotta get me a set of those "Quebec" tires, it's too bad they're so damn expensive.

Hey Kelsow,

I had the 550 on the ice all weekend as well. There was only one other bike (CRF450) but we had over 300 spectators. It was a fund raiser for a sick little girl and we raised a ton of $$$$. Lots of cool prizes from the local bike shops. I provided a Husaberg backpack as a prize.

I don't have any pics yet but I should have some soon as there were lots of cameras. I know that a few your crew over there in Nova Scotia want tires for next year. If you want to put in a combined order for a few sets I can probably get you a better deal on those expensive Quebec tires. I ruined a practically new rear on the weekend because I forgot to check the tire pressure. It was too low, tire flexed too much and now the side wall has 3 inch cracks all the way around the left side. Expensive mistake. :( The bike was hooking up so good that I never thought of it.

Cheers

Cant wait to see some pix.

Wanna sell your completely useless tire???

Yes no problem to sell and ship, what size do you need (21",19",18")? I will check my inventory.

I would be looking for 21x18 for next year as it's getting pretty warm here.
+7°c this coming weekend.
Something used would be quite alright with me.

Hmmm...maybe. It is still an awesome tire but it will eventually start coming apart. You could probably use it for a long time yet. I think I will probably hang on to it for now though. My plan was to get another set for next year to use on the 550 and then use the ones that I have for the (please forgive me for this fellow Bergites) the 250EXC so I can have both bikes on the ice next winter. If I can afford to buy 2 new rears for next year...you get first right of refusal on the one I have.

The tires I use are made by Charlie Beattie in Quebec. Mark Holiday is a top Pro on the ice in Ontario and he makes the studs that you see in the majority of ice tires built in Canada. He used to coach me and got me using Charlie's tires years ago. They are unreal. Ice-berg probably knows him. There are only about 5 or 6 guys in Canada that build really good tires that I know of. It is alot of work and you really have to know how to shave the tire, angle the studs etc.

Front tire can be good for one to two season. rear one, for a novice one to two per year. a pro 5 and up depending how you practice.

Charlie's tires are good but I prefer Marcel fournier's tires They weight 2 pounds less and they have a lot of traction.

If someone what new tire I can arrange that for you and you will pay what it cost to me plus the transport.

2lbs...that seems like alot? Does he use different liners or less studs? I know Marcel makes top notch tires. Maybe I will get a set from you to try them out. Is Picotte still doing any ice racing? I was very interested to find out that Dale Lineweaver had built him a Husaberg for ice racing in the past.

I think the difference is in the liner. The liners are thinner.

As for Pascal, he did 3 or 4 races this year with 2 powerful Yamaha. One 450 and a 250. He has a team for ice racing, races are him, Dominic Beaulac (Dirt Track), and Andrew Ranger (Champcar) my cousin. I think Dominic won 2 championships this year. As for my cousin, he did only 4 races.

Hi Coffin,
Glad to hear you had a successful fundraiser, and a little fun too.
As far as the sport is here, truthfully organized ice racing has been dead for many years. At this point we are just trying to get some of the local lads interested by getting them out and letting them experiece the fun of riding on the ice.As it is now everyone is just testing their own stud patterns and hopefully finding someone the same speed as them to dice with and the short term goal is to keep it simple, inexpensive and fun.

NSman,

I hear you. I think my days of trying to win races on the ice are past. Atleast for now. Like you, what I want to do is to help get more people interested into playing on the ice. Over time, if there was enough interest, I would be pleased to help organize races or simply events for grins and giggles.
