i recently bought a used dellorto phm 40(it looks brand new).
it has the idle and the mixture screw on the right, choke on left(activated by a remote lever) and a button on the left that lifts the slide a bit when pushed(hot start button??).
jetting is the standard for fe600 according to manual.
no acceleration pump
my pal's fe501 02' has a phm40 but not like this.
any body knows where it might have come from? (what bike has a carb like this as OEM)

my road race carbs used to have a 'tickler' on them. it's a button that depresses the float downward and allows more fuel in the floatchamber.

are you sure you haven't got the same?

the button sits along the side of the carb body and pionts through into the float chamber.

PHM 40

Hey, oyk, what model PHM40 is it? There are 5 or 6 different versions, used on Husaberg(PHM40ZS), BMW, Motoguzzi, Ducati et al. www.motorcyclecarbs.com has an extensive Dellorto area on their site, with the various models described by letters in the model # on the side of the carb body.
This is the link to the Dellorto series - http://www.motorcyclecarbs.com/dellorto ... ocarbs.htm - with pix of most of the carbs. If the screws are on the right side of the carb, it probably ISN'T a Husaberg OEM, but one off of another bike. There are exploded views that cover all the parts in the PHM40 series.
Taffys' comment sounds about right; some of the old Amal Concentrics, Monoblocs, and GPs had a tickler on them. Occasionaly, they would stick and fuel would slobber out all over the lower engine cases - and hot exhaust, if the pipes were low as on the old Brit bikes!!!

The PHM (38?) on the old Husky had the remote choke lever you mention. The cable was about 6" long. It did not have the slide lift button.

PHM40DS

here is a pic of the carb(mobile camera).

i think the type is phm40ds.

the button does not have anything to do with the float chamber, it just lifts the slide up a bit.

why :?:

New Carburetor

The new engine is fed fuel and air via a new 40mm Dell’Orto PHM40DS carburetor. For smoother throttle response, the throttle slide is treated with an anti-friction coating. For smoother idle, idle RPM regulation is now accomplished with a sliding valve mechanism.

phm40ds

thanks mr husabutt for the info.

i only ran 10 minutes with it (then i decided to rebuilt my engine).
it works very smooth with great response but....the slide seems to weigh a ton compared to the vhsb flat slide that i was familiar with!
i hope i get used to it :)
